What If I Let Johnny Take the Wheel: A Cool Metal Fire Side Gig Walkthrough

A Cool Metal Fire is part of the side gig Chippin’ In. While Chippin’ In is more like Johnny Silverhand’s deathbed wish of taking vengeance on Adam Smasher, A Cool Metal Fire is about some initial planning of that. What makes this side gig so fascinating is that for the first time, you get to sit back and relax to witness what Johnny is going to do with V’s body. This post will take you through its ins and outs.

A Cool Metal Fire Cyberpunk 2077 story walkthrough

This gig will start after you take the side gig of Chippin’ In. As V, you will buy Johnny’s promise of his just taking your body to talk to Rogue, that’s all. Then, you can lay back and expect some wild days that Johnny’s going to take your body to.

First, he will chat with Claire at the bar in Afterlife. Don’t forget to order his signature drink, a tequila old-fashioned with a splash of beer and a chili garnish. As expected, this one drink will only lead to drink after drink after drink… 🍺

The next stop is to get a tattoo from Cassius, a ripperdoc. You can choose to unlock Billy Goat or the Other One. From Cassius, Johnny will get the name of the ripperdoc working for Adam Smasher, Jeremiah Grayson.

The next scene is Johnny watching Ruby, an associate of Grayson’s, dancing in the nightclub. Johnny will ask Ruby out and the two of them are involved in a car crash. Despite all the dramatic happenings, Ruby still gives out the information of Ebunike. Finally, you will meet Rogue in the motel room and Johnny will give your body back.

Johnny’s free trial of life experience in V’s body: alcohol, cigarettes, women

This side gig consists of fragmentary scenes where you can only watch Johnny drinking, smoking, and enjoying his life at the nightclub. It’s very easy to lose track of what he’s doing exactly. At some moments, it does seem like he’s not doing anything but playing around. But it is also from these moments you can immerse yourself in the nightlife with Johnny who appears to be a more relaxed character than V.

As Hellman says, the Relic will start to take more and more control of V’s body. This gig signals another phase of how the Relic transforms V as V lets Johnny take the wheel for the first time. V drinks like Johnny, smokes like Johnny, and even watches women in the nightclub like Johnny. As Rogue remarks later, she can tell that it’s Johnny in this body from the way V smokes and smirks. What’s different from Hellman’s descriptions is that V might be willingly allowing Johnny to take control as the bond grows tighter and deeper.

That’s the tricky part of the relationship between V and the Relic. Although the Relic starts as an aggressive “parasite” and a seed for future conflicts at the beginning, as the trip goes on, you can decide if you want the bonding and trust to grow stronger or not. The choices in the conversations with Johnny reveal these two tendencies. You can choose to doubt him, or to trust him or even give your life to him in the Pacifica motel (in the main job Tapeworm).

Conclusion

A Cool Metal Fire is a more relaxing job compared to the other ones. In this job, you get to see more about Johnny in his daily life other than the concerts and more drastic operations against the corpo. The story also echoes perfectly with what Johnny told V at the Sunset Motel that he’s itching for some nicotine. It’s not hard to guess that he will take advantage of this chance to quench his alcohol and nicotine thirst!
