Red Dead Redemption 2 NPC “Lily-May” boy location
Walk along the Dakota River until you reach near the Cumberland Falls. You will see a boy throwing stones into the river anguishedly and mumbling something about a person called Lily-May.
Having a conversation with the boy…
The boy will ask you to walk away at first. But you can insist and keep greeting him. He will tell you more about Lily May later.
The boy complains that Lily-May, a girl, doesn’t return his love and looks down on him. He says Lily-May:
“Strutting around, your nose in the air.”
He’s also unhappy about Lily-May showing favor to another guy.
You can choose either to show him kindness and comfort or antagonize him. Arthur’s encouragement is a bit like chicken soup advice. He encourages the kid to become a better man and stand up for himself; eventually, the girl will see who he is.
The boy is partly persuaded and tries to convince himself that one day Lily-May will change her mind after his becoming rich. Later in the Epilogue, you will get to see this boy again and he will blame Arthur for advising him to get this horrible woman.

A mirror of Arthur’s past
If you finish the quest with Mary Linton, you’ll know that Arthur used to be in the same shoes as the boy. Mary Linton’s families look down on Arthur’s occupation and future and reject the marriage. Unlike how Arthur persuades the boy, Arthur doesn’t become better or richer. Mary doesn’t come around to marry him either. It seems pretty ironic that Arthur is capable of making this persuasion to a boy who is like another version of his past.
A symbol of the ideal lover
Lily-May is a culturally loaded name as well. Lily in the Bible symbolizes purity and innocence. May refers to the Roman fertility goddess. It captures the most beautiful season of the year, the blossoming spring with all the freshness and life. The name almost belongs to a girl who’s too ideal and angelic to be real.
Telling from the name, the boy’s pursuit of this ideal girl is destined to fail. Because the girl is infinitely beyond his reach. From another perspective, this NPC’s story is the epitome of beautiful but unreal love.
