What is Gypceros?

Gypceros is a kind of bird wyvern in Monster Hunter Wilds. It has taken the Windward Plains, Oilwell Basin, Iceshard Cliffs, and Wyveria as its habitats.

Similar to other wyverns in the game, it has two wings, two hind legs, and one tail. With that being said, you can still easily tell Gypceros from other wyverns based on its clumsy look, its prominent crest, and the large beak. Another thing worth mentioning is that this monster’s tail is extendable, meaning that it can extend longer than its original length during the fight to reach its enemies.

As to the origin of its name, “gyp” is an English verb often used as an offensive term for cheating or swindling. “Ceros” is a Greek suffix that refers to horns. The combination of these two parts represents the prominent features of Gypceros. This monster is crafty, good at swindling the hunters with its fake death. Other than that, it also has a horn-like crest, enabling it to stun its enemies.

Weakness

The monster’s weakness is at its head, which is also where the crest and the beak are located. The crest and the beak are breakable parts as well. Therefore, you can aim at its head during the hunt because no matter whether you hit the crest or the beak, it can deal significant damage.

According to the Large Monster Field Guide, destroying the crest can debilitate the monster from using the stunning skill again. It is an extra bonus for damaging the head.

Effective Element Against Gypceros

In Monster Hunter Wilds, different large monsters have their featured element, which can be countered by other elements. You can acquire this information based on the Large Monster Field Guide.

Gypceros mainly releases stunning and poisonous attacks. Stunning is akin to the thunder element in the game. Based on this information, you can basically figure out that the ice element will be effective against it. Additionally, the Field Guide lists the fire element as well, which is also the counter element against this monster.

You can go to Gemma and forge the ice-element and fire-element weapons. Because Gypceros appears after the fall of Zoh Shia, there will be many elemental weapons unlocked for you to use in this part of the game.

Based on the progress you make in the survey and the main quest, you may be able to unlock more weapons other than the abovementioned ones.

What Does Gypceros Drop?

Gypceros drops high-rank materials for you to forge high-rank weapons and armor sets. The drops include:

  1. Rubbery Hide+: 60% chance
  2. Gypceros Head: 60% chance
  3. Dash Extract: 60% chance
  4. Gypceros Wing: 40% chance
  5. Gypceros Tail: 40% chance
  6. Toxin Sac: 40% chance
  7. Novacrystal: 40% chance

The weapons of Gypceros Tree carry the poison effects, deriving from the monster’s capability of spitting poisonous puddles.

The armor sets of Gypceros have high thunder resistance, probably from its ability to stun. The armor sets enable poison resistance as well. The beta set has fewer equipment skills but more jewel slots. If you prefer adding jewels to increase the stats of the armor set, you can forge the beta set instead.

How to Hunt Gypceros?

Gypceros attacks through pecking and smashing you using its huge beak and elongated tail. It can also deal elemental attacks by spitting poison and flashing you with the crest. To hunt down Gypceros effectively, you need to do some preparations based on its attack patterns.

What Kind of Weapons Can I Prepare?

There is no clear advantage over Gypceros no matter you are using the melee weapons or the long-range weapons. The latter can hit the weak spot, the crest, better, and give you more time to shun the attacks, but with the melee weapons, you can attack with higher frequency. It is not difficult either to avoid its attack by using melee.

Due to the monster’s weakness against the ice element and the fire element, you can equip the weapons with these two elemental effects. The game features the melee weapons and the bow that directly carry the ice or fire element.

For heavy and light bowguns, you need to check the Ammo Info page at Gemma’s or at your tent to double-check if the bowgun allows the usage of flaming ammo and freezing ammo. You can purchase these special ammos from the provision suppliers, or craft them in your tent using the fire herbs and snow herbs.

Torch pods and frost pods are handy elemental slinger ammo, too. You can easily find materials for torch pods from sparkflints. Frost pods, on the other hand, are not that common. They are made from the frostlanterns in the Iceshard Cliffs.

Besides, the pitfall traps can buy you time to use melee weapons. You can craft it using trapping tools (from the provision suppliers) and nets (made from Ivies and Spiderwebs).

What Armor Can I Wear for the Fight?

In Monster Hunter Wilds’ armor system, there is no poison or stun resistance counted as the elemental resistance. In this case, you can add extra buffs concerning the poison and the stun through equipment skills, jewels, and talismans.

For armor, you can pick the armor with poison resistance or stun resistance as the equipment skills.

You can make use of the stun charm talisman to bring down the duration of stun by 30% at its first level. This talisman can be made from the Balahara Skull, Balahara Shell, and Talioth Scale.

There are jewels you can put into the equipment slots to resist the stun and poison. For example, the steadfast jewel can reduce the duration of stun.

What Kind of Strategy Can I Use Against This Monster?

How Does Gypceros Attack?

To tackle Gypceros’ attacks, we need to familiarize ourselves with how this monster attacks. This bird wyvern usually:

  1. dashes towards you to peck you
  2. stands up and uses the crest to flash and stun
  3. vomits and ejects the poisonous puddles
  4. smashes you by extending its tail
  5. fakes its death near the end of the fight

What Strategies to Use?

The monster is not particularly nimble, so it does not matter that much whether you use melee weapons or long-range weapons.

When you use melee weapons against it, you can set up pitfall traps to create windows for you to attack its weakness. Remember that the shock traps are not effective against Gypceros. You can also use the slinger to drop the environmental pitfall traps to trap the monster. However, when maintaining a close distance with the monster, you need to be more careful about its attacks including the pecking and tail-smashing.

If you opt for a long-range weapon like heavy and light bowguns, you will have more opportunities to hit the crest and the head. This will bring more damage as the head is its weakness, and possibly destroy its ability to stun, even better. When you are keeping a distance from it, you need to be careful about its spitting and tail-smashing.

The Large Monster Field Guide gives instructions regarding the poisonous puddles and the stun as well. You can throw the watermoss slinger ammo onto the puddles to make them disappear. As to the stun, you can hide behind the rocks or any other obstacles to avoid it. As long as you cannot see the flash on the crest, you can evade that stun effectively.

If you want to ignore these two guides, it is fine. The puddles are easy to avoid by stepping around them. There are still considerable gaps between each puddle. The equipment of the stun charm talisman and the steadfast jewel can drastically reduce the stun effect on you. The monster also takes a while to launch the next round of attacks after the stun. There is enough time for you to recover from it.

Generally speaking, Gypceros is not as hard to reach and hit as Yian Kut-Ku when it comes to using melee weapons, because it has a bigger body size and it does not move around that fast. It is up to you which approach you would like to adopt, but each approach will have its advantages and shortcomings that you need to take care of.

Conclusion

Many players rank Yian Kut-Ku and Gypceros as the most annoying monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, and it is not surprising. Both of the monsters have the toddler style and a crazy vibe. They spit fire and poison to compromise your healthy status, dash towards you with wobbly steps, and peck you like chickens on rice. Without doubt, they are drastically different from other cool wyverns such as Rey Dau, Rathalos, Rathian, and so on.

But with high resistance on the correct elements, you can effectively protect yourself from their intense strikes. The elemental attacks can bring their health down faster as well. If you still find it difficult after all the preparations, you can always join the SOS flair quests to hunt the monster with other players.
