Monster Hunter Wilds Jin Dahaad: What Is It and How to Hunt It🐲
Jin Dahaad is the apex predator of the Iceshard Cliffs in Monster Hunter Wilds, who not only has fierce ice-and-fire element attack but is well-protected with a thick armor shell. The story will lead you to this monster on your way from the Cliffs to the village of Suja. This post introduces all the information about this monster, including its origins, location, weakness, and drops. It also gives you a comprehensive guide on what to prepare before the fight and how to defeat Jin Dahaad effectively!

What is Jin Dahaad?
Jin Dahaad is a leviathan and the apex predator residing at the Iceshard Cliffs.
Basic Information
Jin Dahaad has a gigantic dragon-like body build. Compared to wyverns, its body shape resembles a Chinese loong more, with a long middle section, claws and a tail attached to the main body. It is a leviathan, meaning that it is a serpent-like great sea monster in the Monster Hunter series, which also explains its shape.
The name derives from multiple languages. “Jin” in Chinese means gold and the gold color and refers to the skin and the armor of the monster. It also has the connotations of something hard and valuable. In Arabic, “jinn” refers to the demon that hides from our senses. (In Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the demon haunting the main character is called “jinni”.) “Dahaad” is the motion of roaring in Hindi, describing the monster’s intimidating roar and attacks. All these meanings forge the image of Jin Dahaad as the formidable monster hiding deep inside the Cliffs with a golden protective layer and lethal roars.

Weakness
Jin Dahaad has several weak points and breakable parts on its body. The weakness lies at the mouth, like most other monsters in the game, and the chest. However, both weak spots are hard to reach if solely relying on long-range weapons. In that case, you can also try breaking the ice plates on the tail, hind legs, and the fore legs.
The monster also relies on its ridge to generate the ice-element attacks. During the story, Olivia, who will join the fight with you, will drop hints about attacking its ridge as well.

Effective Elements
Jin Dahaad is susceptible to fire-element attacks, similar to other monsters that have freezing attacks. Using fire can deal more damage to it and make your hunting more effective.
As the story progresses, you will be able to unlock more and more fire-element weapons. This also means that when you face Jin Dahaad for the first time, your choices of fire-element weapons are limited, unfortunately.
Here is a list of fire-element weapons that are available when you reach the mission “Nothing Frozen, Nothing Gained”, where you encounter Jin Dahaad for the first time. You can forge these weapons from slaying Quematrice, Guardian Rathalos, and Nu Udra.
| Great Sword | Quematrice Espada 1 & 2 Albirath Wing 1 Nu Krake 1 |
| Long Sword | Quematrice Lima 1 & 2 Wyvern Blade “Ash” 1 |
| Sword and Shield | Quematrice Cuchillo 1 & 2 Albirath Edge 1 |
| Dual Blades | Quematrice Silexes 1 & 2 Twin Albiraths 1 |
| Hammer | Albirath Blundgeon 1 Nu Pulpo 1 |
| Hunting Horn | Albirath Feroce 1 |
| Lance | Quematrice Lanza 1 & 2 Albirath Tail 1 Nu Osminog 1 |
| Gunlance | Quematrice Culebrina 1 & 2 Albirath Rook 1 |
| Switch Axe | Albirath Flamesplitter 1 Nu Zhangyu 1 |
| Charge Blade | Albirath Blade 1 Nu Pweza 1 |
| Insect Glaive | Guardian Rathmaul 1 |
| Bow | Albirath Bow 1 |
Other than the weapons, you can use flaming ammo to counter Jin Dahaad’s element as well. For that, you need to equip a heavy/light bowgun that allows the use of flaming ammo.
Torch pods made from the sparkflints are another option for dealing fire element damage.
Other than these elemental attacks, you can consider making use of the materials collected from the battleground as well, as they are usually the extra supply provided by the game mechanism for your convenience.

When Will I Hunt This Monster in the Story?
The monster debuts in a sub-chapter “Nothing Frozen, Nothing Gains” of Chapter 3. Prior to hunting down Jin Dahaad, you will meet Nata’s families, the Keepers, and learn from them the history of the White Wraith (the Arkveld).
Tasheen, Nata’s uncle, explains that a millennium ago, to ward off the enemies and war, the Keepers invented the guardians (the monsters that solely rely on the Wyvern milk) to protect and serve them. The Arkveld and the Jin Dahaad used to belong to this guardian system as well. Until one day, the guardians develop their ideas of other animal instincts and break free from the Keepers, causing destruction to the Keepers.
Tasheen suggests that you should find out the answer with the Allhearken from the village of Suja. That’s where Jin Dahaad comes in on your way through the tunnel to the village of Suja. Jin Dahaad appears halfway and blocks your passage to the Suja. It marks the end of your adventure at the Iceshard Cliffs as well, as the monster is the apex predator of this area.
In Chapter 5-1 “Storm-Cold Vortex”, the main mission will lead you to Jin Dahaad again. The team suspects that this monster is blocking the energy flow in the wyrmway and authorizes you to hunt it again.

How to Hunt Jin Dahaad?
To hunt down Jin Dahaad for the first time, you need to focus your range attack on the mouth, the chest, and the ridge, and your close-range attack on the legs, especially the hind legs. For this monster, we need to balance our long-and-short-range attacks. At the same time, hit the ceiling rocks to deal massive damage, and make good use of the pod materials you collect from the ground. Before diving into the detailed strategy, let us go through the preparations first.

Weapon
Prepare your fire-element close-range weapon. Although Jin Dahaad deals many range attacks, that does not mean that there is no blind spot we can take advantage of. When you run out of the flaming ammo and the pod materials from the battleground, a fire-element melee weapon is your best friend to bring the battle to an end.
Make sure to have your ammo pouch full of flaming ammo. You can equip a heavy/light bowgun as the secondary weapon. This long-range weapon offers you a way to reach the monster’s weak spots, like the mouth, the ridge, and the chest. You need to go to the “Ammo Info” page either from “Change Equipment” at the tent or “Forge/Upgrade Weapon” at Gemma’s. Flaming ammo is made from the fire herbs which you can filter and collect from the map. Or, to save yourself the trouble, you can choose to go to Jack, the provision provider, to purchase the ammo directly. He is always at the base camp.
Prepare torch pods. Torch pods can deal effective fire-element damage as well with the slinger. You can collect the sparkflints from the map and auto-crafting will transform them into torch pods.

Armor
Jin Dahaad mostly deals ice-element damage, but sometimes with flames as well. In general, you can put on the armor set that has the highest ice resistance.
At this stage of the game (not considering the armor you can get after first-time encountering Jin Dahaad), you will find the Hirabami armor set has the highest ice resistance which can reach 35 without the Ice Resistance talisman.

If you are hunting as a solo player, you should put on the Ice Charm talisman to further improve your ice resistance. If you are playing with your friend, you can consider equipping the Friendship Charm which can heal you when your friend uses a potion next to you. It is convenient for group work as fighting Jin Dahaad can require a lot of healing.
Other Preparations
- Go to your tent and transfer the supply from your box to your item pouch. If you cannot get enough potions, mega-potions, pods, and others from the box, remember to purchase some supplies from Jack.
- Prepare your Palico with a fire-element weapon and ice-resistant armor set as well.
- Have a meal either at the tent or at the BBQ grill. A meal can give you extra buffs for higher defense, damage, or elemental resistance, depending on the ingredients you put in.

Attack Strategy
The general attack strategy is to use the long-range weapon on the mouth, the chest, and the ridge, and switch to the short-range fire-element weapon for the legs and the ridge (if you can manage to hop onto the monster using your Seikret.)
Flaming Ammo & Melee Attacks
You can unleash your first wave of attack by using up your flaming ammo. Aim well at the mouth, the chest, and the ridge. This should bring down the monster’s HP effectively, especially if you enter the ignition mode of the heavy bowgun. Try to fire at the ceiling rock as well when the monster climbs onto the rock or when the monster is under the rock. This will require a good timing.
After running out of the flaming ammo and the torch pods, switch to your fire-element melee weapon and stay close between the monster’s hindlegs. As shown in the below picture with the highlighted area, this spot between the hindlegs yet in front of the tail is a sweet spot to stay in when using melee weapons. It is a blind spot where you can hide from Jin Dahaad’s range and physical attacks. The tail will not be able to hit you either. The ice-element attack, coming from the mouth, is mostly facing towards the front.

Environment Cover and Attacks
Avoid the range attack behind the rocks on the ground, or just follow Olivia. When you hunt down Jin Dahaad in the storyline for the first time, it will unleash a massive range attack during the fight. You need to hide behind the ice rock on the ground, or else you will faint directly. It may be a little haphazard and the easiest way to do this is to follow Olivia. Olivia will be in the fight with you and she knows where to take cover. Compared to finding a rock for yourself in the middle of the fight, following Olivia is easier as she is always marked out with the icon.
Later in the game, when you hunt this monster for a second time, you need to pull down the rocks from the ceiling to form a barrier. This barrier can protect you whenever the monster unleashes the range frost attacks again. Or else, the attack will kill you instantly.
Take advantage of the environment. The game always prepares useful and effective materials near the battleground, such as pod materials, materials for hot drinks, or healings. You can collect them using the slinger. Using a slinger to pull down the ceiling rock can also deal massive damage on Jin Dahaad.

Conclusion
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you will encounter Jin Dahaad at the Iceshard Cliffs on your way to the village of Suja. However, you will not be killing it directly from the first encounter. Like encountering the White Wraith for the first time, the game will lead you back to the monster when you can actually hunt it fully and have all the information disclosed in the Large Monster Field Guide.
As the apex predator of the Cliffs, it is not easy to defeat the monster for the first time. With thorough preparations and hacks, you can find it easier at least to remain alive and wear down its HP gradually. After defeating it, you will be ushered into the village Suja, with all its dream-like sceneries.
