Monster Hunter Wilds Congalala: What Is It and How to Hunt It
Congalala is the monster with the appearance of a pink-fur baboon in Monster Hunter Wilds. Hunting this monster is part of the main story when you just embark on the journey to the Forbidden Lands. Different from the cool monsters in the game, such as Rathalos, Rey Dau, and others, Congalala seems more like a comical monster with its baboon appearance and gas attacks, which does not mean that its attacks do not hurt! This post will take you through all the details about Congalala, including its location, weakness, drops, and the preparations you need to hunt this smelly monster.
Table of Contents

What Is Congalala?
Congalala is categorized as a fanged beast living in the Scarlet Forest and Wyveria in Monster Hunter Wilds.
The monster is not big in size, actually slightly smaller than Doshaguma (the bear monster in the game). Congalala is covered by fur in pink color, with long nails to attack any enemies in its territory. The body part that has no fur is brown color.
Congalala enjoys digging out and devouring different kinds of mushrooms from the forest. These mushrooms will give the monster different breath types, carrying out different buffs if anyone gets hit by the breath.

With that said, you can also try the head, the tail, and the forelegs, which are all breakable parts.

Effective Elements Against Congalala
According to the Large Monster Field Guide, you can try the fire and ice elements against Congalala.
For melee weapons, because the monster debuts at an early stage in the game, you only have the option of using weapons from the Quematrice Tree to deal fire-element damage. There will not be any ice element weapons available when you first hunt it down.
However, as you progress to the later stages of the game (after slaying Zoh Shia), there will be more fire and ice element weapons available when facing a high-rank Congalala.
Other than melee weapons, you can also try the flaming ammo and torch pods for fire attacks. Moreover, the freeze ammo, the frostburst, and the frost pods can deal ice element attacks.

Drops
The monster drops the following items:
- Congalala Pelt: 100% chance
- Congalala Claw: 100% chance
- Vibrant Pelt: 60% chance
- Congalala Fang: 40% chance
- Congalala Certificate: 10% chance
The items can be used to forge the weapons from the Congalala Tree at Gemma’s. The melee weapons do not carry any special elemental attacks.
Congalala’s armor set is called Conga in the low rank category and Conga α and β in the high rank category. One thing worth mentioning is that the armor set enables the skill called Mushroomancer, allowing you to use mushrooms directly for different purposes of healing and cleansing status.
Conga β has fewer and lower level of equipment skills, but allows you to equip more jewels with higher levels.

When Will I Hunt This Monster in the Story?
Congalala makes an appearance very early in the story. You will first encounter the monster in the Scarlet Forest in Chapter 1-3.
As the story goes on, you are commissioned by your team to research the abnormal behaviors of Doshaguma in the Scarlet Forest. The research brings you to hunt Lala Barina first, and later, meet the Wudwuds. Wudwuds, crazy and lively in nature, start pulling off the pink fur from Congalala and enrage the monster. The guild will commission you to hunt the monster for the first time to protect the Wudwuds.
After slaying Zoh Shia and entering Chapter 4, the game will unlock a series of high-rank monsters, including high-rank Congalala. The ecosystem of the whole Forbidden Lands has been undergoing changes after the fall of Zoh Shia. Considering this situation, the guild will ask you to conduct surveys on the Lands again. Then, you can take on optional quests or SOS flair quests to hunt the high-rank Congalala together.

How to Hunt This Monster Effectively?
To hunt Congalala, you need more than the elemental weapons and ammo. Before going into the attack strategies, let us go through the recommended preparations first!
Weapons
Prepare either fire-element or ice-element melee weapons. Congalala is not agile, and it does not fly around like wyverns. The rear of the monster, as the weak spot, is not too high to reach either. Because of this, it is very convenient to deal effective strikes using melee weapons. When you first encounter the monster, you can prepare the weapons from the Quematrice Tree due to the unavailability of other fire-element weapons or ice-element weapons.
(Optional) Pair your melee weapon with a heavy/light bowgun. The game will allow you to have a secondary weapon once you defeat Quematrice. It is not necessary to attack Congalala from afar, but you can prepare a long-range weapon if you prefer some distance from the physical and gas attacks. Remember to choose a bowgun that allows you to use either flaming ammo or freezing ammo. You can check this information at the Ammo Info page with Gemma or at your tent.

Armor
Congalala does not have specific elemental attacks, so you can put on any sets with the highest defense.
However, to resist the gas attacks from the monster, you can consider prioritizing armor pieces that have the Poison Resistance or Paralysis Resistance in the equipment skills. These skills can reduce the number of times you take poison and paralyzing damage, or prevent the poison and paralyzing attacks at level 3. Sometimes, Congalala will let out poisonous or paralyzing breath after consuming mushrooms. The types of breath it releases depend on the types of mushrooms it consumes during the battle.
For the same purpose of resisting the poison effects, the poison charm talisman, the paralysis charm talisman, and the antidote jewel have similar functions, too.
If you are fighting with a team, you can prepare the friendship charm talisman, which can boost your teammates’ health when you apply the healing items.

Bowgun Ammo and Slinger Ammo
After equipping a bowgun with either flaming or freeze ammo slot, you can either craft the special ammo or go to the provision supplier to purchase the ammo.
You need the fire herbs for flaming ammo and the snow herbs for freeze ammo. These two herbs can be found on the map by applying the filter in the lower right corner. You can go to your tent to craft these two special ammo after collecting the materials.
Torch pods are made from the sparkflints, and the frost pods are from the frostlanterns. You can also try using the frostburst, which is another slinger ammo with the ice element. But to find the rime beetles for the frostburst, you can only go to the Iceshard Cliffs.

Other Preparations
- You can prepare your Palico with high-defense armor and a fire-element weapon as well.
- Cook a meal for yourself, either using the BBQ grill or inside the tent.
- Prepare healing potions, antidotes, nulberries, and deodorants, because the gas from Congalala will have various effects.

Strategies to Hunt Congalala
Congalala’s Attacks
Congalala attacks by:
- hopping towards you to scratch or smash into you
- throwing dung at you using the tail
- letting out gas from its bottom
- breathing out stenchy gas (in the color of green, purple, black, or brown) from its mouth
The color of the breath is determined by the types of mushrooms that the monster has eaten. If it does not eat any mushrooms, the monster will only release the stenchy brown gas. Purple gas is poisonous. Green gas is paralysing. Black gas causes blast blights, and the brown gas causes stench.
Attack with Melee Weapons and Ranged Weapons
The most effective way is to use melee weapons as the main attack approach. Congalala’s weak spot, the bottom, is very exposed and within the reach of any melee weapon. Its head and other breakable parts are reachable as well. The monster’s movement is slow, so you will not have much of chasing it around. By using the elemental melee weapons, you can deal fast and heavy damage.
If you opt for a range weapon like heavy bowguns, light bowguns, and bows, you have the advantage of keeping yourself from most of the gas release. Not all the gas attacks are long-range, and some are very close-range. With a ranged weapon, you only need to look out for the moments of long-range gas and the monster hopping onto you.
Time to Use Cures
Prepare to use the antidote when the gas is purple, the deodorant when the gas is brown, and nulberries when the gas is black. For paralysing, there is no cure.
Make use of the water in the Scarlet Forest, too. Rolling in the water can clean up your stenchy status, working similarly to deodorants. The monster travels several spots in the Forest during the fight, and most of the area has water puddles for you to use.
Roll on the ground multiple times to cure yourself from the blastblights. You can also consume the nulberries to achieve similar curing results.
In summary, it is not difficult to hunt Congalala compared to other monsters in the Scarlet Forest, and it is not an apex predator either. If you want to make the preparations and the strategies simple, all you need is the high-attack elemental weapons and an item pouch with deodorants, antidotes, and nulberries.
