What Is This Wyvern Monster?

In general, Rey Dau is an intimidating wyvern in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Basic Information

Rey Dau is a flying wyvern with thunder elemental attacks whom you will encounter during the mission “The Eye of The Storm” in Chapter 2. To make it clearer, a wyvern is a mythical reptile with two legs and two wings, attached with a tail.

Rey Dau’s habitat is at the Winward Plains. During the mission, the plains will turn into a sea of sands with lightning striking from the sky, drastically different from its everyday look. Rey Dau will be waiting for you at the heart of the sandtides.

During the quest, press “Tab” to ride on your Seikret, and your ride will take you directly to Rey Dau for the hunt.

Weakness

Rey Dau’s weak spots are the tail, wings, and head.

However, you should always aim at the parts with blue lights on. As a matter of fact, without the blueness on, the tail or the wings will not be the weak spots anymore. Therefore, always hit on the lightning blue parts on Rey Dau’s body and you will manage to draw heavy damages.

Additionally, the head will not be lighted with the blueness, but it remains a weak spot always. Try to hit the head as well. It’s even better if you can aim at the inner side of the mouth.

Effective Elements

For one thing, Rey Dau can be countered by the water or ice element attack. That means to attack effectively, you need to equip yourself with water-or-ice elemental weapons that can deal much more damage to Rey Dau.

Water element weapons:

This is a full list, but you will only unlock very few of them when you reach Chapter 2.

However, there are not many choices for the water or ice element weapons when you only reach Chapter 2. If you can’t pull up any elemental weapons, long-range weapons can work too, with a bit more patience during the fight.

Other water or ice elemental ammos are:

  1. Slinger ammo – puddle pods: made from Watermoss
  2. Heavy/Light bowgun ammo – water ammos: made from Flowfern or purchased from the provisions at the camp.
  3. Heavy/Light bowgun ammo – freeze ammos: made from Snow Herbs or purchased from the provisions at the camp.

Drops

Rey Dau will drop a series of its body parts for you to forge related weapons and armor. The drops are:

  1. Rey Dau Wingtalon: 80% chance
  2. Rey Dau Scale: 60% chance
  3. Rey Dau Shell: 60% chance
  4. Rey Dau Thunderhorn: 60% chance
  5. Rey Dau Tail: 60% chance
  6. Rey Dau Certificate: 10% chance
  7. Rey Dau Plate: 10% chance

When will I Meet Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The wyvern appears in the mission “The Eye of The Storm” in Chapter 2. In the story, your expedition team has found the Oilwell Basin and talked to the villagers there. But you are notified that the sandtide is coming sooner than expected, and you’d be best to go back to Kunafa.

On your way back with the team, you will witness the White Wraith absorbing energy from Rey Dau. At this point, Nata, the kid from the Keepers, can’t hold himself back and throws a rock to enrage the monsters. As the rest of the team takes Nata to somewhere safe, later, you are commissioned by Alma to hunt this apex predator as it is posting a danger to the others.

How to Slay Rey Dau?

Slaying Rey Dau will take about 15-20 minutes of your time. It can be faster or slower depending on if you have the water or ice elemental weapons or not.

Weapon

Prepare a short-range weapon (optional):

It would be best if you could craft any water or ice element weapons at this point, although the choices are very limited. To make it easier, one of the available options is the dual blades called Ngarpatu-of-the-Waves, which can be crafted from the drops of Uth Duna.

Yet, as mentioned before, short-range weapons are not very effective against this wyvern. You can still prepare it just in case you spot a chance to hop onto the monster during the fight. Then, this elemental weapon can be of great help.

Prepare heavy/light bowguns with the water/ice ammo slot OR heavy/light bowguns without elemental ammos but with high damage :

Not every bowgun has the water/ice ammo slots, so you need to check the weapon information (Ammo Info) to see if it enables these two elemental ammos or one of the two.

You can check the ammo info from your camp.

However, firing all your water ammo at the wyvern will not kill it directly. For the rest of the fight, you will need to rely on the pierce ammos and ammos with other effects.

Armor

Rey Dau deals thunder elemental attack, so it’d be best to equip yourself with thunder-resistant armor and talisman. At the current stage of the game, you can craft a full set of Ingot armor with the Thunder Charm talisman, which will bring your thunder resistance to 21.

The Ingot armor will take earth crystals (Windward Plains mining outcrops), firestones, dragonite ores, and machalite ores. The rest of the three can be mined from Oilwell Basin mining outcrops. Thunder Charm talisman’s materials can be gathered by hunting the Rompopolo.

Other Preparations

  1. Make sure to prepare some puddle pots as well.
  2. Cook a meal with the BBQ grill to gain extra buffs.
  3. Purchase potions, mega potions, and other provisions for your fight.

Attack Strategy

The overall attack strategy is to heavily rely on long-range attacks and dodge the thunder attack with the Seikret.

Aim at the blue-lit parts of Rey Dau’s body and the red-lit wounds using your long-range weapons, such as the Heavy Bowgun, Light Bowgun, or Bow, instead of the short-range ones. With long-range weapons, you have more options when dealing attacks, while short-range weapons are hard to hit on the flying target or the head of the target.

Adjust your firing pace with your Seikret: Your Seikret will slow down when you are aiming. Make sure to unlock your aim so your Seikret can speedily avoid the upcoming attacks. The key to winning is to pace your attack well with avoidance because you won’t be able to take too much damage from this monster.

Another reason to hunt with your Seikret mounted is that the character moves rather slow on foot than riding Seikret. Fighting on foot is not nimble enough to avoid Rey Dau’s attack.

Make use of the territory: The monster, at a later stage, will get tired and go back to a mining cave. You can make use of the rock from the ceiling and use your slinger or bowgun to strike down the protruding rocks. The rocks will deal great damage to the monster.

All in all, it boils down to your patience. You can slay Rey Dau even without the elemental weapons or ammos with only piercing ammos. Riding on the Seikret will greatly reduce your chance of being hit by thunder strikes. Even if you get hit, the Ingot armor and talisman will largely reduce the damage for you.

FAQs

1. What is Rey Dau’s location?

Rey Dau’s habitat is at the Windward Plains. Also, you can open up the map and check Rey Dau’s location by looking for its icon.

Another way to do this is to start an optional quest of hunting down Rey Dau at the quest handler’s (Alma), and accept and depart immediately. In this case, the location will be marked out directly, and the Seikret will automatically lead you to it.

2. What does the name Rey Dau mean?

In short, Rey means “king” in Spanish, and Dau is a Vietnamese word meaning “head”. As hinted in the conversation at the cutscene in “The Eye of the Storm”, the White Wraith is fighting with the apex predator at the cavern. In summary, Rey Dau is a name literally indicating that it is the apex predator in this territory.

3. What is Rey Dau’s HP?

Rey Dau’s HP is not directly shown in the game. So, the way to calculate it is to leave your palico at the camp and hunt Rey Dau on your own. Then, you can check the Damange Dealer at the end screen to get an estimation of Rey Dau’s HP.

However, an easier way to know Rey Dau’s condition is to press B and check the Rey Dau icon with its condition (either a blue or a red fluctuating line) at the lower left corner on your UI.

Your palico 😽 will also notify you of the progress during the fight, with words like “the monster looks exhausted” or “we’re almost there!”

Conclusion:

In the storyline of Monster Hunter Wilds, Rey Dau is the first wyvern appearing in the game. It definitely leaves a strong impression to the players with its frightening looks, fierce lightning attacks, and flying ability. Especially when it appears with the whirling sandstorms and the lightning striking from the sky, the environment simply adds to the tense of the fight.

In summary, to hunt this wyvern is not as difficult as it seems to be with the right equipment and weapons! Pacing with your Seikret and steadying your aim at the weak spots, you will conquer this overawing monster eventually and harvest your success!🥳
