How to Start the Seafaring Quest in Nivalis Nights

The Seafaring quest in Nivalis Nights becomes available as Ava first informs the player that an old friend, Salt Pete, is trying to make contact. The player does not need to do anything to trigger this step. Next, follow the conversation and travel to the Docks to find him.

If the player has not met Salt Pete through Ava’s introduction, talking to Karel Crabface Jones near the boat at the Docks entrance can also lead to the quest. If the player starts the quest via Salt Pete, later, Crabface will be surprised that the player has got the boat already.

After meeting Salt Pete, follow the boat objectives:

1. Meet Salt Pete at the Docks.
2. Board the boat.
3. Take the wheel and begin sailing.
4. Discover a new area using the boat.
5. Return to Salt Pete.

The boat, called the Putter, becomes available during this introduction. It allows the player to travel across waterways that cannot be reached on foot.

About How to Use the Boat

There are several side notes that new players should pay attention to when using the boat:

1. New Area: The player can steer the boat to tunnels highlighted by purple lights. These tunnels will have the location name on top and will take your boat to the next area, such as The Sewer.
2. Dock the Boat: In Nivalis Nights, the player cannot swim or jump, so the player needs to dock the boat using the right control panel on the boat after steering the boat into the green circle area near a dock.
3. Sleep on the Boat: The player can sleep on the bench inside the boat.
4. The Boat Needs Fuel: Make sure to check the fuel, as the boat consumes fuel during exploration. There are gas stations on the sea where the player can add fuel to the boat.

How to Find Fish and Underwater Treasures

One of the main lessons in the Seafaring quest is how to use the boat scanner to locate underwater objects.

When approaching a search area, watch the scanner for yellow pulses. These indicate unusual submerged objects. The player needs to try to reach the center of the yellow circle pulses. Follow the signals until a green circle with a fishing rod and chest icon appears. This marks the area where the player needs to cast.

Equip a fishing rod and cast the line into the green circle. The bobber must land inside the marked area, although the boat itself does not need to sit directly within the circle.

The player may catch ordinary fish or salvage several times before finding the quest treasure. Keep casting until the green circle disappears, which means the player has obtained the treasure in this area.

The quest also provides a Rusty Fishing Rod, introducing the player to the fishing system. For fishing, the player can throw the bobber to areas in the water where there are fish swarms appearing.

All Three Salt Pete Treasure Locations

Salt Pete’s treasure hunt involves three underwater discoveries. The player must recover each one in order and return to the relevant characters before receiving the next clue.

Treasure 1: Near the Oil Rig

The first clue points towards the Oil Rig. Sail from the Docks in its direction and use the scanner to follow the yellow pulses.

The most common mistake is fishing directly beside the main Oil Rig structure. The actual search area lies farther out along the same waterway, near a group of cranes.

Follow the scanner until the green treasury circle appears, then keep casting until the player retrieves the Old Android Head. Return to Salt Pete at the Docks to hand it over and receive the next clue.

Treasure 2: Near Calypso Island

Salt Pete’s second clue sends the player towards Calypso Island. Search along the coastline and follow the yellow pulse signal. The treasure is the Old Android Body.

Once the player has recovered it, return to Salt Pete. The next stage introduces Caleb Foamheart, who provides information about the final treasure.

Treasure 3: Near the Sewers

The final treasure is more difficult to locate because the route involves the Sewers.

First, speak to Caleb Foamheart. After completing his conversation, the player receives the next objective.

Take the boat through the Sewers, heading north, and look for a dark tunnel that leads to the open water with fallen ruins. Once outside, the player needs to go west and then southwest after hitting the edge of the gaming area. Then, approach a high wall in the water where the player will catch the yellow pulse signal.

After retrieving the Old Android CPU, the player can move towards the final conversations.

Nivalis Nights’ Story Behind Seafaring and the Lost Captain

The three treasures are not ordinary underwater discoveries. Together, they form the remains of an old Android: its head, body, and Logic Unit.

As the player follows Salt Pete’s clues, the treasure hunt gradually becomes a search for the truth about the lost captain. Once the player has collected all three pieces, the quest moves into its final conversation sequence:

1. Speak to Karel Crabface Jones to complete the Captain objective.
2. Return to Salt Pete and tell him the truth.
3. Visit Caleb Foamheart at the Mountain Town Boat Hangar to finish the quest.

The story goes that the three of them – Salt Pete, Karel Crabface Jones, and Caleb Foamheart – used to go for adventures on the sea with the captain. The three of them often got into fights, but the captain always managed to reunite them. Until one day, the three of them, again, held different opinions about the end and border of the Gridless Sea. While they were fighting, the captain was hit off the boat by the fallen mast.

Karel Crabface Jones lied about scattering the captain’s remains into the ocean, because he wanted to honor the captain’s wish to die quietly in the sea without being brought back. The android parts that the player has found are parts from another random robot.

The final argument is deeply connected with the background story of Nivalis. For the three of them, some thought that the sea was flat and they would never reach the end of the sea. Yet, Salt Pete insisted that the end of the sea is a high wall, and he had seen the edge.

This is a callback to where the player finds the third piece of the captain. It is right next to the edge of the sea, a high wall.
