When to Play Cube Escape Case 23 in Rusty Lake Series?
Cube Escape Case 23 continues the story after Laura’s homicide case and Robert’s interrogation. Thus, it would be better to play Case 23 after going through Laura’s suicide story and the relationship between Laura and Robert. The Rusty Lake history is always in the background for any game in the Rusty Lake series, but due to the opaqueness of Case 23, it is not really helpful to play through games that are more related to the previous history of the lake in order to understand Case 23.
There are several games in Rusty Lake that are related to Laura and her suicide. The most thorough game is Underground Blossom, which covers Laura’s life story from a baby to her teenage years, adulthood, depression, and finally, suicide. Additionally, Cube Escape: Seasons goes through Laura’s final years and explains clearly whether her homicide is a murder case or a suicide.

As to Robert Hills, Laura’s boyfriend, the game series has The White Door and Cube Escape Theatre to cover his side of the story. The White Door covers Robert’s depression after Laura’s death. The police station scene and the encounter with Dale in the theatre are both mentioned in The White Door as well. The encounter is further elaborated in Cube Escape Theatre.
Generally speaking, it would be a good choice to go through the above-mentioned games before Cube Escape Case 23, because these games lay a great foundation in setting up what is going on in the Case 23.

What Is Cube Escape Case 23 About?
Cube Escape Case 23 has four chapters in total, and each chapter tells a part of Dale’s investigation as he digs deeper and deeper into Laura’s case. The first chapter is the murder scene, the second the investigation, the third the chapel, and the fourth the lake. As the story progresses, Dale also gets closer to the center of the lake’s history and stories.
The first and second chapters stay more in reality and explain Laura’s murder from Dale’s perspective. Dale as the detective is handling the investigation of Laura’s case, collecting and putting evidence together in the first two chapters. He manages to get the clues about the Rusty Lake and embarks on a trip to find it.

Later in the third and fourth chapters, Dale comes to the lake to get to the bottom of Laura’s death and to retrieve his lost memory about the lake. It is mentioned in both this game and Cube Escape Paradox that Dale has lost his memory concerning the lake. At the same time, the Vandermeer is also a name bearing connections with the lake, which means “someone who lives by a lake”. Dale reaches the chapel, and the cubes take him to the fishing cabin, where he needs to escape the corrupted soul.
The ending of Cube Escape Case 23 is pretty opaque, which says that Dale has recovered his memory and become one with the lake. In regard of that, what happens may be that Dale has achieved some level of enlightenment like the Eilanders.

Is Case 23 A Must-Play in the Rusty Lake Series?
Storywise, the game links Laura, Robert, and the relationship between Dale and the lake together. Similar to Cube Escape Paradox, Cube Escape Case 23 takes Dale Vandermeer’s perspective to continue Laura’s case. If players are interested in the details happening in Laura’s murder room and the police station with Robert, they can play Case 23 for more insights from Dale’s angle.
Additionally, in terms of puzzle solving and game structure, the Case 23 is a more time-consuming game in the Cube Escape series. The game has four chapters and some chapters are difficult to solve. For example, the third chapter – the chapel, is heavily loaded with mini-puzzle-games which can take players a while to solve (especially the painting puzzle).

Another creative move made by the Case 23 is setting a timer for puzzle-solving in the fourth chapter. While it could be a blessing to players who are into excitement and thrill, some players may find it pretty stressful and unnecessary. Moreover, the countdown has no other hints besides the darkening background and the intensifying musical effects. Players need to find all the clues and apply them to the room to activate the elevator. As a result, it will take several times of retry to pass the game.
In conclusion, Case 23 explains most of the interesting plots in the first two chapters. Players who dislike too many mini-puzzles or the stress from the time limitation can skip the last two chapters.

FAQs
Where is Cube Escape: Case 23 painter of the lady of the lake?
Firstly, players need to feed the flies to the shell in the water tank. Then, a firefly will float out. Put the firefly into the fish’s mouth, and take the key. The key can open the drawer, which has a file containing the painter of the lady of the lake. The name of the file can be torn off and used on the newspaper word puzzle.
What is the Cube Escape Case 23 slide puzzle solution?
The slide puzzle in Chapter 3 is definitely the most difficult puzzle of the whole game. Players can jump to 15:14 of this walkthrough video to follow the guide step by step. Solving this puzzle while following the guide will still take about 10 to 15 minutes because of the pause and replay. The guide does not offer a smooth solution either, and there are many back-and-forths in the walkthrough video, too.
Conclusion
Cube Escape Case 23 is a more thorough and structured game in the Cube Escape series, similar to Cube Escape Seasons. The game adopts Dale Vandermeer’s perspective and continues the story after Laura’s suicide. It connects the dots of Laura, Robert, and the lake, and eventually, leads Dale back to the lake. However, the ending of the game is dubious in terms of what kind of enlightenment and results Dale achieves at the lake.
The game may also surprise players with the suspenseful atmosphere and pressing time limitation in Chapter 4. The sliding game in Chapter 3 also poses great difficulty to the players. Besides these two drawbacks, the game still offers a good puzzle-solving and clue-finding gaming experience like other Rusty Lake games.
