Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment is one of the most engaging side quests of the game. In this quest, players are commissioned by Katherine to investigate a series of murders happening in Kuttenberg. The murderer has brutally slaughtered several girls, including Katherine’s friend, Alice. This detective-story-like side quest leads players to victims and other leads, until players have enough clues to identify the right suspect. It also asks players to find evidence and choose how to resolve the situation in the end. This guide walks you through the ins and outs and gives advice on how to locate the evidence easily. There are also insights on how to choose the best ending! Spoiler Alert!

How to Start the Quest with Katherine?

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment is a side quest that players can undertake after starting the main quest “Into the Underground” with Katherine. After reaching Kuttenberg, players need to visit Katherine first, according to the main quest “Into the Underground”.

Then, check back at Hangman’s Halter tavern, where Katherine is working. Katherine tells Henry that one of her friends, Alice, was brutally murdered and asks Henry to investigate the crime, because she does not want to put any of her friends in further danger if the incident is related to her spy activities.

Players can choose “I’ll help you. Tell me more.” to start the quest and get some clues from Katherine. Henry will get 150 groschen and a Kuttenberg Knight Shield as rewards, even if players did not ask Katherine for a reward in this conversation. However, if players choose not to get involved, then Henry cannot proceed with this side quest again.

After undertaking the job, Katherine will give Henry some clues, but not be very helpful. The dialogue opens up the following actions that Henry needs to ask the gravedigger for some more information.

Investigation Stage 1: Gravedigger, Lumir, Alice’s Body, and Her Friend

The first stage of the investigation is to talk to the NPCs near the graveyard, including the gravedigger and Alice’s friend, Barbara.

To talk to the gravedigger and get useful information, players need to pass 1 check:

  1. Impression (Medium): I’ve been sent here by the Lords of Leipa / Persuasion (Easy): I’m worried about my friend! / I want justice!

The gravedigger tells Henry some basic information, but the most important clue is to talk to Lumir.

Talk to Alice’s Friend & Examine the Body

The most convenient route is to talk to Alice’s friend and examine her body directly, because they are in the morgue right next to the graveyard. There is no check to talk to Alice’s friend, and she gives a piece of important information:

  1. Alice has a rich and well-dressed suitor.

Alice’s body is lying in the morgue as well. Players can examine her whole body without needing to pass any checks. From the examination, Henry can arrive at some conclusions (Choosing other conclusions will not affect how the story goes later):

  1. Maybe he (the murderer) kept everything (Alice’s hair).
  2. Maybe the murderer collects trophies.
  3. The murderer must have surprised her.
  4. I don’t think he killed her because of Katherine.

The clues that Henry can get from the body examination are:

  1. The killer has strong hands to strangle Alice.
  2. The killer has something like a shortsword to gut her.
  3. The killer pulls off all of Alice’s hair, maybe out of hatred or to keep trophies.

Talk to Lumir

Because Lumir is too drunk when Henry finds him, players need to either give him a Hair o’ the Dog concoction or some more alcohol to sober him up. Giving him some more alcohol, such as a bottle of schnapps, seems to be a cheaper and easier option. Lumir will throw up and become sober after delivering the alcohol.

Lumir will ask Henry why he thinks he can find the truth, which is a check. Players can still proceed with Lumir without passing this check:

  1. Presence (Hard): Nothing is going to stop me.
  2. Persuasion (Very Hard): I can get the truth out of people.
  3. Scholarship (Hard): I can use my brain.

The clues given by Lumir launch a more thorough investigation with other witnesses and related people. He introduces the information he gathered throughout the year:

  1. There are mainly three girls Henry can investigate: Jarka, Zdena, and Stanya.
  2. Henry can ask Father Prokop, the innkeeper Mole, and Strnad about them.

Investigation Stage 2: Victims’ Connections

The second stage is to talk to the victims’ connections: Father Prokop (Jarka), the Innkeeper Mole (Stanya), and Strnad (Zdena). Players can talk to Prokop first because he is located quite close to Lumir’s location. Mole and Strnad are both at the Hole in the Wall tavern, so players can ask questions to them later all together.

At the start of the conversation, Prokop tells Henry about his relationship with Jarka and his suspicion. Prokop was raising Jarka because her parents had passed away, and he is Jarka’s uncle. There are two clues players can gather from the Father:

  1. Jarka served the von Grolle family.
  2. Jarka listened to William’s music a lot.

The following checks are not mandatory. However, passing the checks can give players more clues about Prokop’s opinions about Jarka, which can help players tell if Prokop should be listed as the suspect as well.

  1. Persuasion (Hard): What does a priest know about children?
  2. Intimidation (Easy): Disgrace?
  3. Scholarship (Medium): Come now, help a Christian in need. / Domination (Hard): But this is important.

If players pass these checks, they can unlock more clues as follows:

  1. Father Prokop thinks he is being too hard on Jarka about finding a good husband.
  2. Jarka was pregnant, and the Father thinks it is a disgrace.
  3. Lumir used to suspect Prokop of killing the girls.

The Innkeeper Mole: Stanya, the Only Survivor

Players need to either pay or pass some checks to make Mole speak about Stanya’s clues. If players pay 5 / 10 groschens, Mole will tell part of the clues he knows. He will ask players to pay 50 groschens later for all the clues. Otherwise, players can also choose to pass the checks:

  1. Intimidation (Medium): Out with it, or you’ll be sorry. / Persuasion (Easy): I’m looking for a murderer, so speak! / Persuasion (Easy): I don’t want to pay anything.

After paying the full amount or passing the checks, Mole tells Henry that:

  1. Stanya knows William.
  2. Stanya has a suitor, Barton, the charcoal burner.
  3. Stanya’s room is covered in blood, but it does not seem like she was murdered there.

Strnad: Zdena, the Thief

Strnad challenges Henry to a fight before he is willing to talk, or Henry can pass the following check and pay 30 groschens to skip the fight.

  1. Impression (Hard): I think we can come to an agreement.

It turns out that Zdena had been paying Strnad as her protector, even though she thinks that Strnad is lazy and good for nothing. Strnad gives the following clues about Zdena:

  1. Zdena made a big haul by stealing and was going to run away.
  2. Zdena always sold her goods to Pint, the miller.
  3. Zdena stole a signet ring.
  4. Zdena hung out with William and got into a quarrel with Prokop.

Investigation Stage 3: Follow the Leads to William, Barton, and Pint

The next stage of the investigation of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment takes players to chase down the previous leads. It is quite clear that all three girls know William. Additionally, Stanya has a lover named Barton, and Zdena sells her goods to a guy called Pint.

William: The Suspicious Bard

Players can come to William first, because his location is in Kuttenberg, while the other two leads require players to travel to nearby towns.

To successfully talk to William, players must pass the check:

  1. Coercion (Hard): I can talk to the guards about you. / Intimidation (Easy): If you ever want to play the lute again, start talking!

The following confrontation only happens if players pass the above check. William confesses several useful information about the victims, but at this point, he might also lie about it.

  1. William does not know Alice.
  2. William does not know Jarka’s pregnancy, and he is not the child’s father.
  3. William used to flirt with Stanya.
  4. Zdena knew the young von Grolle and tried to steal from him.

At this point, players can choose either to believe or not to believe William, as it does not affect the following story. However, choosing not to believe William will result in the loss of some reputation.

Pint: Zdena with the Ring in Her Belly

Players can choose to visit Pint at the mill next. Compared to previous NPCs, it is relatively easy to get information from Pint, as he does not require any checks. There are some clues about Zdena that Pint tells Henry about:

  1. Zdena has a hideout nearby.
  2. Zdena keeps the signet ring she stole.
  3. Zdena was followed by a wealthy lord on a horse.

Then, players can head to the ford that Pint mentions and look for Zdena’s body. Zdena was not gutted like Jarka, meaning that the murderer was not gutting every victim as a signature. Other helpful clues include:

  1. Zdena’s clothes are ripped, like someone is looking for something.
  2. Someone tries to get something from her right hand.
  3. The signet ring is in her belly

All in all, the clues based on Zdena’s body examination basically lead players to suspect the owner of the signet ring.

Players can find the body either following the blood or Mutt’s lead.

Barton: Stanya the Sole Survivor

After finding Barton at the kiln, Henry needs to pass the check for Barton to tell Stanya’s information. If players fail the check, Barton will not give permission for players to enter the hut where Stanya is hiding:

  1. Persuasion (Hard): I wouldn’t be asking about her. / Impression (Hard): Lumir gave me the task.

If players fail the check, they can still try to lockpick the hut to meet Stanya inside. The lockpick is very easy. If players pass the check, Barton will tell Henry that Stanya has been hiding here ever since she was attacked in Kuttenberg. He also points out the hut where Stanya is hiding.

Stanya gives a lot of useful hints about the murderer, and she also helps players rule out the possibility of being attacked by Prokop, Mole, or William:

  1. The attacker is very strong when trying to strangle her, which rules Prokop out.
  2. The attacker is not Mole, because Stanya heard his snoring at that time.
  3. William is too silly to commit a murder, from Stanya’s perspective.
  4. Young von Grolle came to the Hole sometimes and smiled with her. He has a mean but well-dressed servant with him.

Later, there is a check that if players pass, Stanya remembers more clues:

  1. Persuasion (Medium): Keep trying to remember.

Report Back to Lumir and Katherine

This conversation sums up all the information that Henry has gathered, which is necessary for players to review all the clues and pin down a suspect.

At the end of the conversation, players need to choose the suspect out of Prokop, William, and von Grolle. To catch the real murderer, von Grolle must be chosen. Players might have already arrived at the conclusion that von Grolle looks the most suspicious based on Stanya’s report and Zdena’s signet ring. Choosing William or Prokop leads Henry to confront them, but this does not take them directly to the bailiff. Eventually, Henry needs to kill them, and they are not the real culprits.

Therefore, Henry needs to choose von Grolle as the suspect and start the investigation of his house as the correct next step in the story.

Collect Evidence: What Is the Easiest Solution?

As the next step, Henry needs to infiltrate the house and collect evidence from the young von Grolle’s room. While there are multiple ways to conduct this part of the quest, the following paragraphs introduce the easiest way to do this!

  1. (Opt. 1)Talk to Servant Thaddeus at the front door and ask to treat the old von Grolle: There is a check that players need to pass to gain access, but it is not difficult. Survival (Easy): I’m skilled in medicinal herbs. Alchemy (Easy): I understand potions. Scholarship (Medium): I’ve read many books. Once passing the check, players can access all the rooms in the von Grolles’ house, except the young von Grolle’s one.
  2. (Opt. 2) Get into the house from the Cobbler’s shop: The cobbler’s shop has a backyard, which is connected to von Grolles’ backyard.
  3. Wait till midnight after 12 o’clock: The young von Grolle seems to go to bed around midnight 12. At night, the families and servants will be asleep.
  4. Get back to the house: Henry can get back to the house, infiltrate the young von Grolle’s room on the second floor, and chokehold him. Then, players have enough time to search the room without being disturbed.
  5. Get Hendl’s Chest Key from the pile of dirty clothes next to the bed.
  6. Open the chest next to the young von Grolle’s bed and collect the hairs.

How to Achieve Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment Best Ending?

Lumir and Katherine will come up with a plan to trap the murderers from the von Grolle’s family after Henry delivers the evidence. Katherine starts a scene at the doorstep of the von Grolles’ house and lures the murderers, Lady von Grolle and Thaddeus, to her room.

In the following plot, Henry can choose to:

  1. Spare and hand Thaddeus over to the law, or kill him immediately.
  2. Spare and hand Lady von Grolle over to the law, or let Katherine kill her.

For Thaddeus, he will be killed either way. Handing him over to the law ends up with his being hanged publicly. Killing him on-site is also an option. Thaddeus’s crime is stopped either way.

On the other hand, Lady von Grolle will only be locked up for now if Henry hands her over to the law. Thus, if players wish to have her dead, Henry needs to let Katherine kill her. As a noble, she will not be punished for her crime.

In conclusion, storywise, it seems like the best ending would be to let Katherine kill Lady von Grolle, which can put the crime to a final stop. Lady von Grolle has lost her mind in killing every young girl who comes close to Hendl, and letting her go seems to be the worst option in terms of the story. However, if players prefer a good reputation, handing her over to the law will be a better option.

Conclusion: Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment is definitely a long mission, requiring many talks with NPCs and investigations. It is intriguing to go through the victims’ lives and details and finally catch the culprits.

However, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 The Fifth Commandment brings some disappointments as well. There are no follow-up stories or clues about the public hanging or how Lady von Grolle will end up in the jail if players hand them over to the law. (Yes, I tried to talk to the Bailiff about it, but there is no option for that…) If players choose William or Prokop as the suspect, the story ends quite abruptly as well. Additionally, von Grolle’s house does not seem to have any family crest, which would be a nice setup otherwise, because Henry has Zdena’s signet ring. Players may assume some more important use of the ring, for it is mentioned so many times, after all.
