Servant of the Lake Complete Guide: Story, Achievements & Review
Servant of the Lake takes players back to one of the most important periods in the Rusty Lake timeline: the years before the events of Rusty Lake: Roots, when Aldous and William Vanderboom were still working toward the discovery of the mysterious elixir. The game is particularly interesting for longtime Rusty Lake fans because it fills in a major gap in the Vanderboom family story. This post explains how to access the game, includes the official walkthrough video, detailed explanations on each achievement with screenshots, and our review of this latest Rusty Lake game!

Servant of the Lake Story: The Much-Expected Missing Piece [Spoiler!]
The most important reason to play Servant of the Lake is its story. The game is set decades before Rusty Lake: Roots, during the period when Aldous, William, and Alexandra are trying to create the elixir (each with their own agenda). The game explains:
- The tension among Aldous, William, and Alexandra, and how each of them wants to collect the three timepieces for the elixir recipe.
- How Harvey has become a parrot in the later story, and how he becomes involved in the Vanderbooms’ plots.
- James’ birth and fate of becoming the sacrifice.
- What happens to the maid Kate and her brother.
William Vanderboom
In Rusty Lake: Roots, William’s death and subsequent transformation are among the game’s most significant events. Servant of the Lake goes backward and explores his life before the elixir.
The two brothers both want the elixir to themselves, and William appears to be the hot-headed and naive one. He asks Harvey to steal the other two timepieces to get the book, but is deceived by Aldous as Harvey hands over the book to Aldous.

Aldous Vanderboom
Aldous is arguably the most immediately recognizable character. Longtime players already know him as the man who eventually becomes Mr. Crow. In Roots, Aldous and William discover the elixir, with Aldous ultimately transforming while William dies and is reincarnated. Rusty Lake has explicitly described Servant of the Lake as the story that explores their lives leading up to that discovery.
Servant of the Lake therefore gives Aldous much more depth. Instead of simply knowing his final identity, we see the man he was before becoming Mr. Crow. As the game goes, he does not seem as smart as he does later after turning into Mr. Crow. He is in charge of the family reunion, thinking about getting the book for the elixir recipe for himself, thus getting into a fatal argument with William.

Alexandra Vanderboom
The game also introduces the Vanderbooms’ sister, Alexandra, who had remained mysterious before Servant of the Lake. She appears to be the quieter character in the game, but it turns out that she is the main plotter wearing the red cloak. During the game, the player can see a character wearing a red cloak following them here and there, and that is Alexandra observing Harvey from afar.
As Aldous and William fight for the book and the timepieces, she takes down and moves the injured Aldous and William to the cellar as she proceeds to sacrifice James. She obtains the elixir from Aldous, who previously successfully made the elixir with the book. However, Kate, the maid, makes it in time to rescue both James and Harvey. In the end, Harvey escapes the house with James.

Harvey
And then there is Harvey. Harvey has been one of Rusty Lake’s most recognizable recurring characters since the early Cube Escape games. Servant of the Lake gives fans the most important clue of how Harvey turns into its parrot form.
After helping William collect the three timepieces, making elixir with Aldous, and helping Alexandra access the cave by cutting the chandelier rope, he is buried under the ruins in the cave. Kate saves Harvey with the elixir, but it has also transformed Harvey into the parrot form. After escaping the cave, Harvey returns to the house and tries to find out Kate’s brother’s whereabouts upon receiving Kate’s request.

Secret Level: Looking for Kate’s Brother
The player needs to finish the game first before receiving Kate’s note and unlocking the secret level. The player can use the notebook to skip to each task to look for clues.
| Day 1 – Waking up Aldous | Adjust the alarm to 04:05. (Kate’s note mentions the time.) |
| Day 2 – Helping with Bathing | Click the tiles on the wall in the following order: Alexandra, tub, suitcase, hand (The brother’s note mentions there is a hand in Alexandra’s suitcase when she’s bathing.) |
| Day 3 – Assisting in Alchemy | Click the left and right buttons on the box on the floor in the following order: right, right, right, left, right, left, right, right, left. (These are the directions for how to get out of the maze on the note from the middle of the maze.) |

Reviews on UI, Narration, and Puzzle Difficulty of the Game
The UI Is Excellent
One of the things many players particularly enjoyed about Servant of the Lake is the UI.
Rusty Lake has always had a recognizable visual identity, but the interface here adds a notebook that records all the tasks, achievements, notes, and a handwriting notebook section. This UI not only helps the player to easily track gaming progress, but it also allows the player to replay any tasks to collect missing achievements. The secret level makes use of this design as well, to let the player search for secret clues in each task.
Compared to the earlier Rusty Lake series, where the player needs to replay the entire game to collect achievements, this notebook definitely gives you a big relief!
The Story Is Much Clearer
Another major strength is the way the game narrates its story. Rusty Lake’s lore can be incredibly difficult to follow because the series rarely explains everything directly. Characters appear in multiple games, timelines overlap, and important events are often communicated through symbolism.
Servant of the Lake is still unmistakably a Rusty Lake game, but the story feels more focused. Because the game stays inside the Vanderboom estate and centers around a specific period in the family’s history, it’s easier to understand what you’re looking at and why it matters.
Most importantly, it finally fills in the missing part of the Aldous and William elixir story. If you have played through the Cube Escape series and Rusty Lake Roots, you can easily figure out the main story plots, characters, and what’s going on in Servant of the Lake. All in all, it has a clear story narration, and it clears up what has been confusing from the previous Rusty Lake games.
Puzzle Difficulty and Pacing
The puzzle difficulty is another major strength. Servant of the Lake doesn’t throw its hardest puzzles at you immediately. Instead, the game establishes its mechanics with relatively straightforward tasks before gradually introducing more complicated puzzles. And generally speaking, the game difficulty is significantly toned down for a clearer narration, so the player can focus on the story better.
The most difficult part would be the alchemy, where the player needs to figure out what each symbol represents. Some mini-games turn out to be time-consuming, such as the one in the bathroom for the soap bar. But it is fair to say that even for the secret level, the difficulty level is lower than Underground Blossom or Cube Escape The Cave.
Some Unfulfilled Expectations
Am I the only one expecting something more shocking? After playing through the pig feces sandwich and Laura’s death in Cube Escape Seasons, the player might be ready to see something as disgusting and as terrifying in Servant of the Lake. Although there are some jump scares in the game, the main tone appears to be more about plotting and family tension.
On top of that, some mini-games can be designed better. The logic of the music notes when William is singing is really hard to get. While Aldous appears to be allergic to potatoes in the previous mini-game of dish tasting, it turns out that he is allergic to carrots when serving the starter. The pointing has to be accurate and not cross over other symbols at all when William is pointing at the scroll. There are moments that you have to look for a guide, and only feel that “I can’t believe it’s that simple” afterwards.

Is the Game Worth Playing
- If you’re new to Rusty Lake, it is not a bad choice to play Servant of the Lake first. It explains the storyline before Rusty Lake: Roots, and the timeline progression is more natural because the Rusty Lake series published the games in a retrospective order.
- But if you’ve already played other Rusty Lake games, Servant of the Lake is still one of the more important games to play for understanding the Vanderboom family. It answers all the key questions of Mr. Crow’s identity, Harvey’s identity, James’ birth, and what happened before Rusty Lake: Roots.
