When Should I Play Rusty Lake Paradise in the Rusty Lake Series?

To introduce when to play Rusty Lake Paradise, it is best to start with some background information about Rusty Lake. Rusty Lake Paradise, created by Rusty Lake Studio, has a story background based on the Rusty Lake Universe. It chiefly centers on the ethereal tales of the Eilanders, the Vandermeers, and the Vanderbooms. In sum, the Rusty Lake universe has strong ties to the three family names. From the roots is what “Vanderboom” signifies. “Vandermeer” means beside the lake, while “Eilander” means from the island.

Additionally, to learn more about the fates of each family, character, and their ties, players need to complete other relevant Rusty Lake games. However, each game has its own focus on different characters and different families. For example, Rusty Lake Hotel and Rusty Lake Paradise focus on the story of the Eilanders, while Rusty Lake: Roots is about the Vanderbooms. Therefore, players can focus on one family at a time and arrange the sequence of gaming accordingly.

Thus, players should play Rusty Lake Paradise first, and then go for Rusty Lake Hotel, or else the Hotel would not make much sense. Do I need to play any other games first before Rusty Lake Paradise? No, that is not necessary. Comparatively, the game is very similar to Rusty Lake: Roots. It explains the story of what happens to the Eilanders clearly and is indeed self-sufficient.

All in all, playing through the Paradise alone can give players a pretty complete picture of the family.

What Is Rusty Lake Paradise About?

Generally speaking, the game revolves around the two sacrifices for eternal life in the Eilander family. The first sacrifice is Jakob’s mother Caroline, and then the second is Jakob. The Eilander families sacrifice both of them in order to obtain the enlightenment, which basically means eternal life.

The story starts from Jakob’s return to the Paradise island after receiving the letter of his mother’s death. The island is suffering from the ten plagues: water turning to blood, frogs, lice, flies, livestock pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness and the killing of firstborn children.

However, as Jakob solves the plagues, he discovers the black cubes containing his deceased mother’s memory as well. In short, the black cubes tell how Caroline discovers the way to enlightenment and how she is not willing to sacrifice the firstborn, Jakob, for the family to achieve enlightenment. Under pressure from the families, she had to send Jakob away to save his life. As a result, the families sacrificed Caroline in Jakob’s stead. However, it only ends in having ten plagues.

Then, at the end of Rusty Lake Paradise, Jakob sacrificed himself and achieved enlightenment for all his families: Nicholas (father of Jakob), Gerard (uncle of Jakob), Elizabeth (younger sister of Jakob), David (younger brother of Jakob), and Margaret (grandmother of Jakob). Finally, they turned into men with animals’ faces for eternal life, corresponding to the guests in Rusty Lake Hotel.

Is Rusty Lake Paradise Worth Playing?

The game falls into the genres of puzzle games and point-and-click games, and it fits well as a casual game as well. It narrates the story by presenting puzzles, including clues, tools, and mini-puzzle games to the players. Compared to Rusty Lake: Roots, Paradise features more mini-puzzle games, which require players to solve mathematical questions, find patterns, etc.

The level design of the game certainly wins hearts, which is as good as Rusty Lake: Roots. Similar to the Roots, the Paradise lays out the whole plot based on the map of the Paradise island, related to the meaning of “Eilander”, so players need to go to the Paradise island with its winding paths and enigmatic buildings to get to the heart of the truth. As the story progresses from one plague to another, the environment of the island shifts as well.

Rusty Lake Paradise builds up a unique cultish and mystic atmosphere for the Eilander family story as well. The overall environment of the Paradise island is dark and suffocating, with view-blocking trees and small winding paths. Besides, the livestock on the island looks lifeless and static, giving the island a primitive and pre-civilized look. The unsettling vibe has been building up until the climax of the last plague, the sacrifice of the firstborn, which is also the most cultish moment in the game. Overall, the game fully engages players with the suspenseful and mysterious build-ups.

Conclusion

Rusty Lake Paradise has completed the story about the Eilanders and finished the suspense left by Rusty Lake Hotel. The end of the Paradise shows the hotel as well, indicating the connection of the two games in terms of the storyline. Mr. Owl in the hotel will seek vengeance on the guests. While the Paradise focuses on enacting the whole plot about the Eilanders, the Hotel reveals more about every character’s true nature in a symbolic way.

The game is a piece that cannot be missed in order to have a full grasp of the story concerning the Eilanders. At the same time, it also impresses players with its surpressive atmosphere and cultish plots, which are good combinations with the overall puzzle designs.
