The Sims 4 How to Get the Cow Plant: A Complete Guide
The Sims 4 cowplant is a bizarre, sentient plant with a cow’s head, sharp teeth, and a taste for cake – and occasionally Sims. It has been a franchise favourite since The Sims 2. It is weird, wonderful, and surprisingly tricky to obtain if the player does not know where to look. This guide covers everything needed to know about how to get a Cowplant Berry, grow the plant, keep it alive, and farm it for the best rewards.
What Is a Cowplant?
Before learning in The Sims 4 how to get the cow plant, let us discuss what exactly a cow plant is. As the name implies, this is a plant that looks like a cow. Its scientific name is “Laganaphyllis simnovorii”. Cowplants have a long history in The Sims franchise, with their first appearance in The Sims 2. In The Sims 4, this bovine plant has growing stages, as well as an undead ghostly version introduced in the Life & Death Expansion Pack.

In The Sims 4, How to Get the Cow Plant?
To grow a Cowplant, the player first needs a Cowplant Berry. These are not available to buy as a plant or seed in the game. Instead, there are several reliable methods to obtain one.
Method 1: Fishing at Desert Bloom Park
This is the easiest and most consistent method. Head to Desert Bloom Park in Oasis Springs and fish in the small pond nestled against the mountains at the very back of the park. This location offers the highest chance of reeling in a Cowplant Berry, even with a low Fishing skill. It may take a few in-game hours, but patience pays off.
Method 2: Grafting Dragonfruit and Snapdragon
Grafting is the most reliable way to produce Cowplant Berries in unlimited quantities. However, it requires level 5 Gardening skill to unlock grafting. Here is the process:
- Obtain Snapdragons and Strawberries. Snapdragons can be harvested in most neighbourhoods during Spring or Autumn. Strawberries are also found in the wild during Spring. Both can be found in the seasonal seed packs as well.
- Graft a Strawberry onto a Snapdragon, or a Snapdragon onto a Strawberry, to produce Dragonfruit.
- Plant the Dragonfruit, and take the cutting from the Snapdragon to graft onto the Dragonfruit bush, or the other way around. This produces a plant that yields Snapdragons, Dragonfruit, and Cowplant Berries.
Method 3: Rare Plants Packets
If the player has level 10 Gardening skill, they can purchase Rare Plants Packets for §1,000. These packets contain rare items including Cowplant Berries, Dragonfruit, Death Flowers, and Magic Beans. This method requires patience, as the berry is not guaranteed in every packet.
Strictly Business Gnomes also have a chance to show up in your garden and gift the player random seed packets (including the rare plants packets), even when the player has not reached level 10 Gardening skill yet.
Method 4: Space Exploration
If the player owns the Get to Work expansion pack, they can use the Rocket Ship to explore space. This has a chance of returning with a Cowplant Berry. Upgrading the rocket also provides more chances for further exploration and successful returns.
One thing worth mentioning is that when the Sims travel to space, they go into the rabbit hole, and the player needs to make a series of choices. There will only be rewards if the choices are correct and the exploration is successful.
Method 5: Gardener Career Reward
If the Sim joins the Botanist branch of the Gardener career, they receive a Cowplant Berry as a reward for reaching level 5.

How to Get an Undead Cowplant (Life & Death Expansion)?
The Life & Death Expansion Pack adds Undead Cowplants – ghostly plants that behave just like regular Cowplants, but do not need feeding. There are four ways to obtain one:
- Find in the Wild: Travel to Mourning Vale in Ravenwood. In the courtyard, find Percival the Patient, an Undead Cowplant. The Sim can play with this cowplant in the wild, but cannot bring it back home.
- Purchase from Waylon Warez: This mysterious merchant lurks around Crow’s Crossing in Ravenwood. Players have a chance to find him at Eternal Hollow. Select “More Choices > Mysterious Merchandise > Take a Chance on Mysterious Item” for §750. It is luck-based, and the player may need to try several times before getting the Undead Cowplant, but eventually it will appear.
- Rewards Store: Redeem an Undead Cowplant for 3,000 Satisfaction Points in the Aspiration Panel’s Rewards Store. The player can find this faster in the Potions category.

How to Grow and Care for a Cowplant?
- Once the Cowplant Berry is secured, drag it onto the home lot and select the “Plant” option.
- Leave 2-3 tiles in front of the seedling so it has space to grow.
Once fully grown, the Sim can name the Cowplant, pet it, play with it, and feed it. The Cowplant must be fed every 12 in-game hours. If the player forgets, the Cowplant will display its cake tongue, and an unwary Sim might become its next meal.
- When a Cowplant eats a Sim (even if it spits them back out alive), the player can milk the plant and reobtain the Sim’s mood when swallowed. The great part about this is that if the Sim is in any mood debuff, the Cowplant will take away the Sim’s mood, such as “Very Sad”.
- If the Cowplant kills a Sim, it produces The Essence of Life, which extends another Sim’s lifespan by a few days. Being devoured by the Cowplant for a second time will kill a Sim.
- A ghost can still be swallowed and spat out. The Sim can milk the Cowplant to get Essence of Life.

Final Tips on The Sims 4 Cowplants
- Keep the Cowplant alive. The player can feed it with the “Feed” interaction.
- The Cowplant essentially transfers the Sim’s emotions and extends their lifespan.
- The most reliable way to obtain the Cowplant berries is through grafting, the Gardening skill, and its career.
- Getting the ghosts from the household swollen by the Cowplant is a good way to farm Essence of Life.
Essentially, a well-fed Cowplant does no harm, but also gives nothing. If the player wants to farm any Essence of Life or Essence of Emotions, the player needs to feed Sims to the hungry Cowplants. It is a roundabout way to extend the lifespan or adjust the Sim’s emotional status.
