The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle Expansion Pack Release & Basics
Released in June 2020, The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle expansion pack is the ninth expansion pack for The Sims 4. It introduces:
- environmental gameplay,
- renewable energy systems,
- fabrication,
- recycling,
- community voting,
- container-style housing,
- and the industrial world of Evergreen Harbor.
Instead of simply adding a new activity, Eco Lifestyle changes how your Sims live. You’ll think about electricity consumption, water usage, neighborhood initiatives, and how your household contributes to the surrounding environment.

Get the Most Out of Eco Lifestyle in Evergreen Harbor
The expansion introduces Evergreen Harbor, a former industrial town that can either become greener or fall further into pollution depending on your actions. The world features three distinct neighborhoods:
- Port Promise: Originally an industrial shipping district, Port Promise is filled with factories, warehouses, and shipping containers. It’s the perfect location for players who enjoy modern industrial builds or container homes.
- Grims Quarry: This suburban neighborhood balances residential living with industrial history. It offers a good starting point for players looking to gradually improve the environment.
- Conifer Station: Conifer Station provides a more traditional suburban atmosphere while still allowing players to influence the neighborhood’s eco footprint through community projects and green initiatives.
One of Eco Lifestyle’s biggest strengths is that the world changes visually. Cleaner neighborhoods feature healthier plants, brighter skies, and more wildlife, while polluted areas become covered in smog and litter.
Even though players can still access the neighborhood action plans and eco-friendly furniture and builds in other maps, Evergreen Harbor is where the player can unlock the complete experience of the pack. For example, the map has several community centers covered in litter for the player to rebuild.

Realistic Gameplay: Building a Sustainable Home
This is one of the best parts of this expansion pack. Eco Lifestyle introduces several systems that let your Sims become increasingly self-sufficient.
You can install:
- Solar panels
- Wind turbines
- Dew collectors
- Insect farms
These objects help reduce utility bills while producing renewable resources for your household. Players who enjoy realistic gameplay can combine Eco Lifestyle with the Cottage Living ep Simple Living lot challenge or the Off-the-Grid challenge to create fully self-sufficient homes.

New Self-Sustaining Skills: Fabrication & Candle Making
Fabrication Skill
One of the most enjoyable additions is the Fabrication skill. Instead of purchasing every object from Build Mode, your Sims can create their own furniture using fabricated materials. As your Fabrication skill improves, you’ll unlock new recipes for:
- Chairs
- Sofas
- Tables
- Decorations
- Candles
Crafting your own household items feels especially rewarding for players pursuing off-the-grid challenges.

Candle Making
Candle making is also a newly added activity in the fabrication skill. Using wax and various dyes, Sims can create decorative candles in different colors and scents.
These candles can well illuminate the Sim’s home, and they are great substitutes for electric lights if the player is playing the Off-the-Grid challenge. One thing worth noticing is that candles run out as they burn. The Sim needs to keep making candles if they are making them for lighting purposes.

New Activities: Recycling & Dumpster Diving
Recycling
Eco Lifestyle also introduces the Recycler machine. Instead of throwing unwanted objects away, Sims can recycle almost every item in the inventory into Bits and Pieces, the crafting materials used by the Fabricator.
The recycling is a nice combo with the Cottage Living expansion pack and the gardening skill. The player can turn different items into compost + recyclables. The farm produce from llamas and cows can turn into more compost, while other non-farm produce items will give the player more recyclables.

Dumpster Diving
If your Sims don’t mind getting a little dirty, they can search dumpsters for hidden treasures. Dumpster diving can reward players with:
- Furniture
- Crafting materials
- Collectibles
- Food (Usually spoiled)
- Upgrade parts

The Community Efforts: Neighborhood Action Plans, Community Space & Eco Footprint
Neighborhood Action Plan and Community Space Voting
Perhaps Eco Lifestyle’s most unique mechanic is the Neighborhood Action Plan (NAP) system. Each week, Sims can vote on community initiatives that affect everyone living in the neighborhood. Examples include:
- Green Gardening
- Clean Energy Production
- Self-Sufficiency
- Sharing Is Caring
- Free Love
- Modern Development
Once approved, these policies change gameplay for every household in the neighborhood. Different maps will have different active NAPs, and if the player is not happy with the NAPs in the current map, they can move to another map or try to repeal the current plans. Repealing a petition requires 5 other Sims to sign for it, which can be quite an effort if your Sim does not have friends.
Evergreen Harbor also features three deserted lots. The player can vote on the voting board at the lots to turn the lots into functional community centers.

Eco Footprint
The expansion introduces the Eco Footprint system. Every neighborhood falls into one of three environmental states:
- Green
- Neutral
- Industrial
Your Sims’ actions influence which state your neighborhood moves toward. On the appliances that your Sim is purchasing, you can check whether it adds to the industrial Eco Footprint or the green one.

A Career to Become a Civil Designer
Eco Lifestyle introduces the Civil Designer career. Career branches include:
- Green Technician: Focus on renewable technology, sustainable energy, and eco-friendly innovations.
- Civic Planner: Work with local residents to improve neighborhoods through community projects and environmental initiatives.

| What Eco Lifestyle Doesn’t Do Well | What Eco Lifestyle Does Well |
| – The Off-the-Grid challenge can be frustrating and confusing at first. The player needs to take time to figure out the water and electricity system. – Building the community centers is way too easy. The player only needs to vote, and that’s it. – The fabricator is very similar to the woodworking table in terms of making furniture. – The fabrication skill and candle making are simply designed and cannot diversify the gameplay. | – The self-sustaining appliances such as the wind turbines have enriched the gameplay, enabling another way to deal with the bills. – For the player who likes realistic gameplay, Eco Lifestyle is a nice pair with Cottage Living for realistic cooking, farming, recycling, and eco-friendly living. |
