How to Get Married in The Sims 4: Complete Marriage Guide
Whether you’re creating a happy family, completing a legacy challenge, or simply telling a romantic story, marriage unlocks new gameplay opportunities, from combining households to raising children together. In this guide, we’ll walk you through every step of getting married in The Sims 4, including how to propose, plan a wedding, elope, and improve your chances of a successful romance.
Potential Partners & Romance
Before getting to the question of how to get married in The Sims 4, you’ll first need someone to fall in love with. Any Sims can be your romantic partner, other than teenagers if your Sim is an adult. Teenager romance is between teenagers only.
Once you’ve found someone interesting, start building a friendship before moving on to romance. Successful romantic interactions gradually fill the pink Romance relationship bar. There are several ways that can help your Sims build up the romance faster.
- Although it’s possible to flirt immediately, having a decent friendship often makes romantic interactions more successful.
- Make use of the environment to put your partner in a flirty mood, such as turning on the flirty emotional aura of paintings, the bucket of wine and rose, and other decorations.
- Interact strategically between romantic interactions and other friendly ones. If the partner feels awkward, better build the friendship higher with other interactions other than continuing the romance interactions.
- Be careful not to flirt too aggressively too early. If another Sim isn’t interested, repeated romantic interactions can make conversations awkward or even damage your relationship.
- If the player has the Dine Out expansion pack, asking the date to dine at a restaurant also gives many flirty emotional buffs.

Become Boyfriend or Girlfriend
Once your romance bar is high enough, you’ll unlock the option:
- Ask to Be Boyfriend/Girlfriend: Choosing this interaction officially starts the relationship.
The other Sim may also ask before the player, and there will be a pop-up window showing up to ask if the player is willing to become the romantic partner. Becoming boyfriend or girlfriend is a crucial step towards the next level of relationship.

Get Engaged
Proposing requires both high romance interest and friendship level. Click on your partner and navigate to:
- Romance / Relationship → Propose
If your relationship is strong enough, they’ll usually accept. Once accepted, both Sims become engaged. You’ll also receive a notification confirming the engagement. If the proposal fails, don’t worry. Spend more time improving both friendship and romance before trying again.

How to Get Married in The Sims 4: Elope & Ceremony
After becoming engaged, there are two main ways to marry your Sims.
Option 1: Elope Immediately
The fastest method is simply selecting:
- Romance / Relationship → Elope Immediately
Your Sims will instantly exchange vows without needing to organize a ceremony. Although simple, your Sims will still officially become spouses.
Option 2: Plan a Wedding
If you’d rather celebrate with family and friends, you can organize a wedding. Open your phone or calendar and schedule a wedding event. You’ll be able to customize many aspects of the ceremony, including:
- Venue
- Guests
- Wedding attire
- Activities
- Decorations
A successful wedding creates memorable screenshots and fits perfectly into story-focused saves. During the wedding, your Sims can perform several traditional activities.
Popular wedding interactions include:
- Exchange vows
- Exchange rings
- Cut the wedding cake
- First dance

Mods & Tips to Change Marriage Gameplay
Marriage in The Sims 4 isn’t permanent. If relationships deteriorate, Sims can:
- Divorce
- Break up
- Remarry someone else
Some players enjoy creating dramatic storylines involving love triangles, cheating scandals, or second marriages. To add more dynamics to the relationships, the player can try out the following options:
- Relationship category: Currently in the base game under the Relationship interaction category, the Sim can inquire about the partner’s romantic boundaries and ask them to reconsider the boundaries, such as non-physical intimacies and physical intimacies with other Sims. A successful adjustment can avoid jealousy in the future.
- Make use of relationship mods: While MC Command Center does not support polygamy anymore, relationship mods like WonderfulWhims still give players the options to adjust jealousy and open relationships. This is the easiest and smoothest way to cheat and allow polygamy relationships in The Sims 4. NPC Weddings and Invites mod allows the player to marry NPCs.
- Eco Lifestyle EP: The free love neighborhood action plan can deactivate jealousy and pursue open relationships in the neighborhood.
