Grimshire Cheese Guide: How to Get Milk, Make Cheese, and What It’s Used For

Cheese is one of the best-preserved food items you can produce in Grimshire. Unlike many fresh ingredients that spoil after a few days, cheese offers high stamina recovery, lasts much longer than raw milk, and serves as an ingredient for additional food processing. Although it takes some time to unlock, cheese production is well worth the investment once you’ve established your Alpheep ranch. In this guide, we’ll explain how to unlock the Fermentation Barrel, where to get milk, how to make cheese, and the best ways to use it.

How to Unlock the Fermentation Barrel Recipe

Before you can make cheese in Grimshire, you’ll need to unlock the Fermentation Barrel.

The blueprint is obtained by completing Adeline Sablewood’s Research Quest, which requires donating 75 specimens. After completing the quest, you’ll receive both your first Fermentation Barrel and its crafting recipe. Usually, it will take the player until the first fall to collect 75 specimens. Here are some tips to collect specimens faster:

  1. Prioritize donating new items, and the player can find some new items from the Root Cellar.
  2. Fishing in different areas throughout different times of the day and seasons gives the player different kinds of fish.
  3. Mining and reaching new levels and areas gives different ores and crystals.
  4. Farming seasonal food and foraging around the village help locate new research specimens as well.

If you want to build additional barrels, you can craft them at the Crafting Table using:

  • 32 Planks
  • 6 Iron Bars
  • 6 Nickel Bars

Because many preserved foods are made in the Fermentation Barrel, it’s a good idea to build several of them instead of relying on just one. Every fermentation job takes 12 in-game hours, so multiple barrels greatly increase your overall food production.

How to Get Milk Through Alpheeps

The main ingredient for cheese is Milk.

Milk is produced by Alpheeps, one of the most productive ranch critters available in Grimshire. Once you’ve built an Alpheep Barn and raised adult female Alpheeps, they’ll begin producing milk regularly.

Because milk is used in several recipes and processing chains, it’s worth expanding your Alpheep population as your farm grows. Having multiple female Alpheeps and at least one male Alpheep ensures a steady supply of dairy products and a stable population.

If you’re planning ahead for later Defender’s Rations, investing in Alpheeps early is highly recommended. Besides producing milk, they also provide wool, making them one of the most versatile critters in the game.

Rather than selling fresh milk immediately, try saving it for processing. Converting milk into artisan products is usually a much better long-term investment than treating it as a simple food item.

Grimshire Cheese Making Process Explained

Once you have both Milk and a Fermentation Barrel, making cheese is straightforward.

Place the following ingredients into the Fermentation Barrel:

  • 3 Milk
  • 1 Salt

After 12 in-game hours, you’ll receive:

  • 3 Cheese

Unlike some other preservation methods, cheese doesn’t require fuel. As long as you have enough milk and salt, the barrel will process the ingredients automatically.

Salt is one of the key ingredients in food preservation throughout Grimshire, so you’ll likely want to keep a healthy stockpile on hand for making cheese and other preserved foods. The player can purchase Salt from the General Store.

Since every batch converts three milk into three cheese, having several Alpheeps and multiple Fermentation Barrels lets you build up a large reserve surprisingly quickly.
