Master Mettle in Travellers Rest: Quick Quest Guide with Grog Recipe Location

Mastering Mettle is one of three challenges in the Training quest in Travellers Rest. After meeting Kyroh, the player continues the quest, which requires mastering three disciplines: Precision, Balance, and Mettle. Each discipline has its own quest and minigame, with Mettle training from the pirate Captain Brook D. in the Pirate Grotto. This guide covers where to find Captain Brook D., his lost Grog recipe, and how to complete this quest!

How to Start the Quest “Master Mettle” in Travellers Rest

The first step to start “Master Mettle” quest in Travellers Rest is to progress through the main storyline until the “Training” quest becomes available.

After completing “The Pledge Banquet” and “Spycraft”, which are the main quests, the player can find Kyroh in the woods south of the tavern. He is located in a clearing near a small waterfall in the northeastern part of the woods. What the player needs to do to find him is to:

  • head south until reaching the river bank,
  • then head east to the forest, and keep going east until reaching another river and a bridge,
  • and finally head north to the waterfall.

Speaking to Kyroh starts the Training quest and reveals that the player must master Precision, Balance, and Mettle before challenging him to a duel.

For Mettle, the required teacher is Captain Brook D. Head to the Beach and travel all the way to the west side. A cave leads into the Pirate Grotto, where the player can find Brook D.’s ship. Enter the ship and speak with Brook D. to begin the “Family Recipe” quest.

Find the Lost Grog Recipe

Brook D. explains that he wants to teach the player the ways of Mettle, but first needs some Grog. Brook D. gives the player a map, which provides a clue to the location of the missing recipe.

The map can initially look confusing because it is an upside-down depiction of the area. The important landmark is a group of four trees next to the River Bank, a wood bridge, and a road with fences, located south of the tavern.

If the player travel south from the tavern, reach the River Bank and look around the four trees, they can notice a partially buried chest. Dig up the chest to obtain the Grog recipe.

How to Make 40 Grog

Brook D. requires 40 Grog, and the recipe produces 20 Grog per batch. Two batches are therefore required.

Each batch requires:

  • 2 Sugar: Made from Sugar Cane at the Food Prep Table, or purchased from Holly at the Harvest Hill Farm shop.
  • 1 Honey: Harvested from the Apiary, or purchased from Holly.
  • 10 Lemon Fruit Juice: The player needs to purchase lemons from Lia, grow their own lemons, or forage them from the world. Use the Press to make Lemon Fruit Juice.
  • 2 Cinnamon: Made from Aromatic Plants at the Food Prep Table. The player can find Aromatic Plants in the world.
  • 1 Distilling Yeast: Purchased from Amos.

There is one particularly important requirement: the Grog must reach normal aging or better before the player can give it to Brook D. This means the player cannot complete the quest immediately after producing the drink. The Grog needs time to age first.

Complete the Mastering Mettle Challenge

Once the 40 Grog has reached at least normal quality, return to Brook D. at the Pirate Grotto and give him the drinks. Brook D. then provides the Mettle training. The player must complete the Mastering Mettle minigame to finish this part of the Training quest. It is basically a challenge of not getting hit by cannonballs.

  • The player needs to survive for 1 min 30 sec.
  • The player only has 4 lives.

The player can unlock a Steam achievement – “Without even a single drop of rum” – if the cannonballs didn’t hit the player at all in the minigame.

After completing the challenge, Mettle is considered mastered. The player can then continue working toward the other two disciplines, Precision and Balance, if they are not finished before the Mettle training. There is no requirement on which training should be finished first, but Precision and Balance usually go hand in hand because they are about solving the grudge between Zuzzu and Kujaku.

Rewards for “Master Mettle” in Travellers Rest

Completing Mastering Mettle provides several rewards:

  • Grog recipe
  • Mini Cannon (Decoration)
  • Treasure Map (Decoration)

Decoration might first appear to be less useful, but because how Travellers Rest links the decoration with Comfort and Tavern Reputation, putting more decoration into the tavern brings in more Reputation points for leveling up. It is fair to say that the best rewards from this quest are the decorations, actually, compared to the Grog recipe, which the player can replace with serving other drinks in the tavern.
