Graveyard Keeper 2 Steel: Where to Get It and What to Use It For
Steel in Graveyard Keeper 2 is the late-stage core material. It unlocks stronger tools, supports advanced crafting, and helps the player progress through the end-game quests that require higher-tier items. However, obtaining Steel works differently from obtaining Iron: the player cannot simply mine Steel Ore and smelt it into ingots. This guide explains the quests leading to Steel purchasing and the best applications for Steel materials.
Where to Get Steel in Graveyard Keeper 2
The Bishop at the Royal Foundry is the main source of Graveyard Keeper 2 Steel Ingots. Once the player reaches him and unlocks his Steel supply, the player can purchase ingots directly through dialogue.
Unlike Iron, Steel does not have a standard ore-to-ingot smelting recipe. This makes the Bishop an essential NPC for anyone planning to unlock Steel equipment and advanced production, and money-making an important trick to learn for acquiring Steel (and Special Wood as well…)
Where Is the Bishop?
The Bishop resides in the Royal Foundry, located beneath the old bathhouse in the northern part of Town. The entrance connects to the water tunnel near the ship lock. The player cannot walk to the location. After accessing the area, using Milestones is the only way to get there, similar to the ones used for Stilt Houses and Sluice Area.
The Royal Foundry remains inaccessible until the player completes the combat encounter “Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement”.

Quests Leading Up to Unlocking the Royal Foundry
The player needs to progress through the water tunnel questline before reaching the Bishop. The main route involves the following steps.
- Complete Closing the Western Floodgate: Start by progressing through Herbert’s combat-related quests and completing Closing the Western Floodgate. This stage advances the campaign through the infected areas around the ship lock and opens the route toward the eastern floodgate.
- Progress Through Closing the Eastern Floodgate: The next stage involves the eastern floodgate battles. The player must complete the required encounters, including Closing the Eastern Floodgate: Part I and Part II. These two parts are connected. Part II only allows the player to finish the combat with two squats.
- Complete Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement: Winning this encounter reveals the Royal Foundry and allows the player to reach the Bishop. Once inside, speak with him and select the Steel-related dialogue to begin purchasing Steel Ingots.
These combats are rather challenging, especially the one that has Part I and II. If the player fails Part II, the player needs to start Part I all over again. If you are having trouble with the combat in Graveyard Keeper 2, check our combat tips and guide here: ⤵️

Cost of Steel in Graveyard Keeper 2
Steel costs 1 Silver per ingot, with larger purchase quantities available. Compared to the income that the player can make by selling Precious Trinkets, for example, one Precious Trinket can be sold for 75 Silver and 9 Copper. Purchasing Steel in a lump sum would not be a difficult matter for the player at this stage. Usually, 100 Steel is enough to finish up the rest of the game, if the player does not intend to build a very extensive automation factory.

What Is Steel Used For?
Steel serves several important purposes, but the best investment for most players is upgrading tools. These tools improve mastery and make it easier for both the player and their zombies to handle advanced crafting tasks.
- Steel Tools: Tools contribute to mastery, which determines whether a zombie worker can perform certain recipes. Steel tools generally give +6 Mastery, allowing zombies to perform most of the automation work without using perks.
- Quests and Progression: To finish the entire game and reach the ending, the player has to complete the questlines of all the main NPCs, including Jack, Gunter, Herbert, Agatha, Albert, and Linda. The late-stage quests mostly required either Steel Ingots or Steel-craft items, a way to cap the player’s progress until the player has secured Steel.

Final Tips for Using Steel in Graveyard Keeper 2 Efficiently
Steel marks an important transition from basic crafting toward advanced production in Graveyard Keeper 2. The player unlocks it by completing the water tunnel battles, reaching the Royal Foundry, and purchasing ingots from the Bishop.
However, the player may realize that to finish the game, Steel performs a rather different role compared to Copper Ore and Iron Ore. While Copper and Iron are largely in need for building, crafting, and automation in the mid-game stage, the amount of Steel needed is not as much. It is more like a material primarily serving the quest progression purpose.
