Graveyard Keeper 2 Red Eye Choice: Keep It or Give It Back?

The Red Eye choice in Graveyard Keeper 2 affects the requirements for the final quests and adds extra indications and a darker tone to the ending. This post explains how to unlock both choices related to Red Eye, when to choose, and the differences between the two endings. For players approaching the final battle, understanding when to make the decision, whether it can be changed, and how to avoid quest progression problems can save considerable time.

When Does the Player Get the Red Eye in Graveyard Keeper 2?

The player receives the Red Eye in Graveyard Keeper 2 during the “Friend or Foe” quest. The player must first complete “Finding Old God” and continue restoring the portal by putting more pieces back into place, and then an old man appears while the player sleeps and gives the player the Red Eye.

How to Activate the Choices of Keeping the Red Eye and Giving It Back

The choices become available through the player’s conversations with the Old God. After receiving the Red Eye and entering the Cheese Room to have a conversation with the Old God, continue asking the Old God questions about the item and the surrounding story. The player should exhaust the available dialogue options before the option of keeping the Red Eye appears.

And don’t worry, even if you choose to keep it, you can still change your mind later.

The two choices lead to different requirements for completing the final quests:

  • Keep the Red Eye: The player must reach 100 relationship with six characters.
  • Give the Red Eye back: The player must reach 90 relationship with the same six characters.

The choice therefore changes the amount of relationship progression required before the final battle. Keeping the item also allows the player to experience additional dream sequences that explore the characters’ relationships in greater depth.

Players who want to see as much story content as possible should consider keeping the Red Eye. Those who want to finish the main storyline with less relationship grinding can return it.

Can the Player Change Their Mind After the Cheese Room?

Yes, the player may still be able to return the Red Eye after initially choosing to keep it.

Before activating “The Last Battle”, visit the restored attic and speak with the Old God. The player can return the Red Eye there, which reduces the final relationship requirement from 100 to 90 for each of the six characters.

Importantly, reaching 100 relationship with all six characters does not necessarily lock the player into the “Keep the Red Eye” route. As long as “The Last Battle” has not appeared in the quest chart, the player can return the Red Eye and proceed the story with 90 relationship.

For anyone uncertain about the choice, the safest approach is to try raising the characters’ relationship to 100 before talking to Davy about the Palace. If during this process the player finds that the extra relationship requirements are too demanding, there is still the option of returning the Red Eye before “The Last Battle”.

Keeping the Red Eye: A Different Perspective on the Ending

Keeping the Red Eye raises the relationship requirement to 100 for all six characters. What the player needs to do is:

  1. Activate each of the 3 new perks.
  2. Go to sleep and have nightmares about each pair: Albert and Linda, Gunter and Jack, and Agatha and Herbert.
  3. Talk to each pair and activate three new quests.
  4. Craft the quest required items and complete the three new quests. Then the relationship will reach 100, and the player can ask them for the favor.

The extra quests also provide more context about the characters’ relationships. The player can experience additional dream sequences in which familiar NPC relationships take a troubling turn. Albert becomes more controlling, Gunter is obsessed with fans and generating more fun with PR, and Agatha is unhappy about Herbert’s wish to visit the Barracks again.

Instead of intervening and giving more advice to his friends, the Keeper with the Red Eye chooses to satisfy their wishes and craft items for them. The items include a Luxury Drape for Albert, an Elegant Prosthetic Hand for Jack, and a Comfortable Chair for Herbert. Corresponding to the later confession from the other Keeper’s wife, the Red Eye seems to be corrupting the Keeper as well. He becomes a wish granter and satisfies more and more wishes. This is the darker turn of the story in this option.

This route is especially appealing to players who want to see the characters beyond their usual dialogue and quest interactions. The extra content does not fundamentally change the ending, but it makes the journey toward it feel more complete.

Returning the Red Eye: A Shorter Route to the Ending

Returning the Red Eye reduces the required relationship level to 90 for all six characters. This makes the final stretch less demanding, especially if the player has already completed most of the main quests and wants to avoid additional grinding.

The player does not need to unlock the three extra perks or complete the three additional quests associated with the 100-relationship route.

However, the player also misses the additional dream sequences and the more complicated character stories revealed through the extra quests. The ending remains the same, so returning the item does not prevent the player from completing the main storyline.

All in all, choosing this option is more like the Keeper choosing the better path. Compared to the darker twist, the Red Eye should only be owned by a god, and this choice will avoid the Keeper being corrupted by the Red Eye like the other Keeper’s wife.

The Correct Order for Completing the Final Quests

Quest order matters during the final stages of Graveyard Keeper 2. To reduce the risk of getting stuck or encountering progression problems, the player should follow this sequence:

  1. Step 1: Decide whether to keep or return the Red Eye. Make the decision first through the Old God’s dialogue in the Cheese Room. If the player chooses to keep it but later wants to return it, check the restored attic before activating “The Last Battle”.
  2. Step 2: Reach the required relationship level with all six characters. Keeping the Red Eye requires 100 relationship with each character, while returning it reduces the requirement to 90. Complete the necessary quests and prepare the relevant items to move forward.
  3. Step 3: Finish collecting the fifth portal stone, talk to Davy, and complete the final combat encounter at the Palace. Once the relationship requirements are satisfied, progress by finishing up the portal and the final combat quest.
  4. Step 4: Watch the ending cutscene.

Some players get stuck because of bugs related to the sequence. They may have finished the looters’ Palace quest before talking to the Old God about the Red Eye in the Cheese Room, and got locked out of the 100 relationship quests.
