The Sims 4 Work Expansion Pack Trilogy: Get to Work, Dine Out, and Businesses & Hobbies

For many players, working in The Sims 4 is a major part of the immersion experience, and the traditional rabbit-hole career where Sims disappear for hours and return with a promotion is less satisfying. Over the past decade, EA and Maxis have released three major packs that fundamentally changed how Sims work: Get to Work introduced active careers and retail stores, Dine Out added full restaurant ownership and management, and the newest addition, Businesses & Hobbies, finally allows players to turn any hobby or skill into a profitable small business. This post introduces all three packs and discusses the pros, cons, and tips for each pack!

The Sims 4 Work Expansion Pack Get to Work: The Foundation of Active Careers

The Sims 4 work expansion pack Get to Work was the very first expansion pack released for the franchise, launching on March 31, 2015. At the time, it was revolutionary. For the first time in The Sims 4 history, players could follow their Sims to work instead of watching them disappear into a rabbit hole.

Active Careers: Doctor, Detective, and Scientist

The three active careers introduced in Get to Work remain some of the most detailed gameplay experiences in the entire game. However, many players think that although it is refreshing to follow Sims to the workplace for the first couple of hours, it becomes dreary and boring after completing the task flow a few times. And they would rather Sims going into the rabbit hole to work….

  1. Scientist Career: This is the most convenient of the three and offers the most generous rewards. Sims can use the Invention Constructor to create new devices, the Chemistry Lab to mix potions, and the Chemical Analyzer to study samples. As Sims advance, they can eventually build a wormhole generator that transports them to Sixam, a secret alien world. Inventions and discoveries can be sold for profit, making this career path lucrative both during and after work hours.
  2. Doctor Career: Sims must diagnose patients based on visual symptoms and test results. The work begins with mundane tasks like greeting patients and taking temperatures, but as Sims get promoted, they advance to diagnosing illnesses, delivering babies, and other tasks.
  3. Detective Career: Detectives investigate crime scenes across various locations, analyze evidence, interrogate suspects, and eventually make arrests. The “bad cop, good cop” interrogation system adds roleplaying depth that many players appreciate.

Retail Stores: The First Business Ownership

Beyond active careers, Get to Work introduced the ability to own and operate retail stores. Players can purchase any lot, convert it into a retail store, and sell anything – from baked goods to clothing to collectibles.

The system includes employee management, price markups (ranging from 5% to 100%), curb appeal mechanics that affect customer interest, and business perks that unlock as the store grows.

However, the retail system has notable limitations.

  1. Employees require constant supervision, and they rarely succeed in persuading customers to buy.
  2. Customers can be frustratingly slow to purchase items. The higher the price markup, the more difficult it is to persuade.
  3. The store must be actively managed to turn a profit.

Many players find that running a retail store requires more effort than the returns justify. It is more like a chore than anything fun to do compared to the small businesses in Businesses & Hobbies or restaurant running in Dine Out.

Should You Still Try Out This Pack?

This pack is essential for players who want hands-on career gameplay. The active careers are genuinely fun at the start, though they can become repetitive over time. The retail system is functional but limited. For players who primarily want to run businesses, the newer packs offer better options. And honestly, the best part of the pack is the scientist route, in which players at least can make constant discoveries and explore new things.

Dine Out: The Restaurant Empire

Released on June 7, 2016, The Sims 4: Dine Out is a game pack rather than a full expansion. Unlike the other two packs discussed here, it focuses exclusively on one thing: restaurants.

Building and Customizing Restaurants

Players can build restaurants from scratch or customize pre-made venues. The build/buy catalog includes over 100 new items designed specifically for restaurant environments. There are also other fan-made restaurant lots in the Gallery that players can directly place into the world. Some require other pack content, and others just need the base game.

Restaurant Management

Owning a restaurant comes with its unique challenges compared to small businesses and retail stores.

  1. Players must hire and manage staff, including at least one chef, one waiter, and one host. Additional staff can be unlocked through perks.
  2. The menu can be customized across four categories – drinks, appetizers, main courses, and desserts – with experimental cuisine options adding variety.
  3. Price markups can be set between 100% and 300% of base cost. Advertising packages range from Silver to Diamond, costing between §120 and §1,200 per day.
  4. After unlocking the appropriate perk, players can also choose ingredient quality from Grade F to fresh organic, directly affecting meal quality and cost.

The Five-Star Rating System

Restaurants earn ratings on a 1-5 star scale based on multiple factors:

  1. Ambiance (decor, cleanliness)
  2. Service (waiter mood, skill level)
  3. Personal touch (owner interaction with customers)
  4. Host greeting (host mood and skill level)
  5. Wait time (seating speed and food delivery speed)
  6. Food and drink value (quality balanced against markup)
  7. Food quality (chef skill and mood)
  8. Food critics’ reviews carry more weight than regular customer reviews, making their satisfaction a top priority

Compared to the small businesses in Businesses & Hobbies pack, Sims can open the restaurant without being physically on the lot and earn passive income pretty conveniently this way. But in that case, achieving a five-star rating is notoriously difficult (the stars might even drop), and it is almost impossible if players do not control their Sims to supervise the restaurant running.

Should You Still Try Out This Pack?

This pack is for players who love restaurant management and are willing to spend time supervising the restaurant business. The management system, such as the ads, food quality settings, and employee management, is more thorough than the small businesses. And with certain mods, players can actually turn restaurant running into very profitable businesses.

Moreover, Dine Out also adds restaurants and dining out as another major experience to the gameplay. It is a very satisfying and immersive experience to date other Sims in fancy restaurants on the map.

Businesses & Hobbies: The Most Versatile Gameplay

Released on March 6, 2025, The Sims 4 Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack represents the most flexible and modern approach to work yet. Instead of forcing players into specific career paths or business types, this pack allows any hobby or skill to become a profitable venture.

The Small Business System

The core feature of Businesses & Hobbies is the ability to create a small business based on activities rather than products, thanks to the game-changing kiosk design.

Players can run businesses out of their own homes (using new zoning features to separate public and residential areas) or purchase dedicated Small Business Venue lots.

When setting up a business, players choose:

  1. A business name and logo
  2. Up to five business activities from over 70 options
  3. A pricing model (charge a one-time entry fee, a fee per hour, or no fee)
  4. Target customers filtered by age, traits, etc.

Players can create a gym (work out, use hot tubs), an art gallery (view art, paint, listen to music), a library (read, use computers), a nightclub (dance, drink), and so on. Other creative ways of building small businesses are discussed here. The cross-pack compatibility is remarkably high.

As businesses grow, the business earns Business Renown and unlocks Business Perks along three alignment paths. The Dreamer path is the “good” path, focused on quality and customer satisfaction. The Schemer path is the “shady” path, focused on cutting corners and maximizing profit. The Neutral path offers a balanced approach. The choice of alignment affects not just the business but also the Sim’s relationships outside work (such as your Sim’s relationship with romantic partners).

Tattooing Skill & Pottery Skill

The new Tattooing skill allows Sims to give other Sims tattoos using a tattoo bench. Players can choose from pre-made designs or create custom tattoos in Tattoo Paint Mode, using stamps and stencils to design unique body art.

The Pottery skill uses a Pottery Wheel to create decorative and functional pieces. After shaping a piece, Sims finish it in a Pottery Kiln, choosing from various glaze colors.

Players can build their small businesses based on tattooing and pottery making skills. Charge customers for the entry fee, coaching, mentoring, and the tattoo service. The pottery artifacts made by students can be sold for retail as well.

Should You Still Try Out This Pack?

This pack is the most flexible and modern work expansion yet. It rewards creativity and experimentation, allows players to design businesses around their preferred playstyles, and integrates remarkably well with other packs. For players who can only buy one work-focused pack, this is the strongest recommendation.

Imagine that after getting off from a 9 to 5 work, your Sim can just relax at home while having employees running the small business at the same time. It’s honestly one of the most convenient and pain-free ways to earn considerable amounts of income in The Sims 4 ever.

  • Start and design your small business
  • Attend pottery classes
  • Give other NPCs tattoos and charge fees
  • New map for business adventures

The Sims 4 Work Expansion Pack Right for You?

  1. For players who can buy only one pack: Choose Businesses & Hobbies. It offers the most flexibility, the fewest bugs, and the widest range of possible businesses. The ability to run a business from home, choose any combination of activities, and integrate with other packs makes it the strongest overall package.
  2. For players who love active careers: Get to Work remains the only pack that lets players actively control their Sims at work as a Doctor, Detective, or Scientist. The retail system is also profitable, especially with mods for selling jewelry, luxury goods, and other expensive stuff.
  3. For players who want to add restaurant experiences to their game: Dine Out is the only option. The restaurant management depth is genuinely impressive. And the experiences of dating and dining out at other restaurants add much fun to the gameplay.
  4. For players who want all three: All three packs work together seamlessly. A Sim can own multiple businesses at the same time, such as a small business and a restaurant. Especially the Dine Out pack, the restaurant is a solid source of passive income after reaching 5 stars.
