Basic Uses of Graveyard Keeper 2 Fertilizers
There are seven named fertilizers in Graveyard Keeper 2 currently used in the farming system. Fertilizers are applied to an empty Garden Bed before planting, and the game does not allow the player to use the same type of fertilizer repeatedly to the same Garden Bed.

Best Time and Situation to Use Each Fertilizer
Higher Success Rate = More Yields, Same & Higher Quality Seeds
In practice, Peat and Farming Fertilizers are usually the most important because Garden Bed Mastery directly affects the success rate of each Growth Tick.
Garden Bed Mastery comes from garden upgrades and fertilizers, rather than the player’s personal Farming Mastery after the crop starts growing. If the Garden Bed’s Mastery is below the crop’s requirement, individual Growth Ticks can fail. Raising the Bed’s Mastery reduces those failures and eventually allows the crop to reach 100% success for each Growth Tick.
Failing 1 – 2 Growth Ticks from the end of the Growth Tick bar means that the player will not get higher-quality seeds from this harvest. The yields will reduce as well.
Here is a comparison of different Garden Bed Mastery levels for the same crop.

For More Yields & Higher Quality Seeds: Farming Fertilizer + Crop Boosting Fertilizer
In this situation, combine Farming Fertilizers with Crop Boosting Fertilizers.
- The Farming Fertilizer raises the Garden Bed’s Mastery and improves the success rate of each Growth Tick.
- Crop Boosting Fertilizer adds two additional Growth Ticks, that once these Ticks succeed, the player can get more higher quality seeds.
This combination is particularly useful when the player is working toward Silver or Gold seeds rather than simply producing the same regular supply of crops.

For Low-Mastery Garden Beds: Headstart Fertilizers
Headstart Fertilizers have a different purpose. They do not increase Garden Bed Mastery. Instead, they begin the crop with one or two guaranteed successful Growth Ticks. This makes them useful when the Garden Bed has relatively low Mastery, and the player wants to get more yields.
However, Headstart should not automatically replace Farming Fertilizer.
- If the underlying Garden Bed Mastery remains too low, future Growth Ticks can still fail. Farming Fertilizer addresses that underlying problem, while Headstart mainly gives the crop an immediate advantage.
- As future Growth Ticks can still fail, there is a high chance that the player cannot obtain higher-quality seeds, even after using Headstart Fertilizers.

More Peat: A Much Needed Material for Fertilizer Crafting
The biggest limitation when producing Farming or Headstart Fertilizers is often Peat. Peat comes from Leaves (harvested from crops) at the Compost Pile. There are several ways to increase the Peat the player can get per time.
- The basic recipe converts 8 Leaves into 2 Peat.
- The upgraded Compost Pile II converts 16 Leaves into 5 Peat.
- The perk Compost Chemist can double the Peat yields. (One of the most worthwhile perks)

The Easiest Way to Make Farming and Headstart Fertilizers
The next step is producing the Growth Elixirs. Mixing Elixirs will be easier if the player has Laboratory II, which allows the player to mix with three ingredients.
- Weak Growth Elixir uses one red and two green runes: An easy way to make this is to combine one Clay with two Water.
- Rich Growth Elixir uses one red and three green runes: An easy way to make this is to combine one Clay with one Water and one Flour.
- Miracle Growth Elixir uses one red and five green runes: An easy way to make this is to combine one Beeswax with one Water and one Flour.
The player can easily obtain the above-mentioned materials through Clay Pits, Water Wells, Wheat, and Beehives. And it will be even easier if the player has already got the zombies to auto-dig the Clay Pit, and has built their own Beehives.
These elixirs then combine with Peat at the Formulation Bench to create the corresponding Tier I, Tier II, Tier III Farming and Tier I, Tier II Headstart Fertilizers.

The Easiest Way to Craft Crop Boosting Fertilizer
Crop Boosting Fertilizer I requires 2 Peat and 1 Dream Dust at the Formulation Bench.
- Dream Dust requires one green and one blue rune and can be produced through several different alchemy combinations: One particularly simple approach is to use Water and Seed Oil, which can be obtained from the Water Well and normal vegetable seeds.

Which Fertilizer in Graveyard Keeper 2 Should the Player Use?
The best approach is to treat fertilizers as tools for different farming goals.
In simple terms:
- Need more Growth Ticks to be successful? Use Farming Fertilizer.
- Trying to produce higher-level seeds? Combine Farming Fertilizer with Crop Boosting Fertilizer.
- Garden Bed Mastery is still low with Farming Fertilizers applied? Headstart Fertilizer can provide guaranteed early progress.
- Need more fertilizers overall? Produce more Peat.
