Sultan’s Game Troops Pt. 1: How to Gather Troops & Defeat Sultan’s Army Overwhelmingly!

Troops are an indispensable part of winning through the rebellion route in Sultan’s Game. Without at least one troop, the game ends directly with the failure of raising an army against the Sultan. Although players can choose not to use troops in the battles, the game’s mechanism demands that players raise at least one army. The next question is: How to get Sultan’s Game troops? Different characters and stories in the game give troops to players. This post explores as many as seven ways to get troops in the game: Marauder’s Band, Habib’s Mercenary Adventurer, Faraj’s Troop of Radicals, The Gardeners of the nursery, Nawfal’s King of Flames Army, Riel’s gang, and Fardak’s Indignant Crowd and Refugee Army.

The Easiest Way to Get Sultan’s Game Troops: Marauder’s Band

While in Sultan’s Game, troops can be acquired in multiple ways, the easiest way is to get the Marauder’s Band by increasing the notoriety.

The event Reprobates in Refuge is triggered when Arzu’s notoriety reaches 5, and the game starts this event repeatedly as long as players do not use the bloodshed cards on them. Ignoring the event does not stop the criminals from seeking refuge at Arzu’s place.

It is the fastest way that players can have an army added to their cards and use the army in events and even the rebellion route. The downside of this event is that it does not guarantee to provide Marauder’s Band, one of Sultan’s Game troops. Sometimes the event refreshes other criminals who cannot be used as an army.

Upgrade the Guesthouse: Mercenary Adventurer

Mercenary Adventurer, one of Sultan’s Game troops, is an army that can be triggered through the guesthouse upgrade and Habib’s requests. They can only join the players’ cards until Arzu starts the rebellion route. Therefore, they can only be used in rebellion, not in other normal events. On another note, Mercenary Adventurer has a special advantage as it can be used both as an army and as a follower card, whereas other armies can only be placed in the army slots.

Players need to upgrade the guesthouse to level 4 and respond to Habib’s request at the same time.

Do not upgrade the guesthouse to level 4 all at once. Only upgrade the guesthouse after responding to Habib’s request to avoid any bugs.

Construct & Upgrade the Guesthouse

  1. Construct a Guesthouse: Use a Vacant Room and 10 coins to build the guesthouse.
  2. Guesthouse Upgrade: The guesthouse takes Notoriety 5 & 5 coins to be upgraded to level 2, Notoriety 10 & 10 coins to level 3, and Notoriety 20 & 15 coins to level 4.

Respond to Habib’s Requests

Firstly, players need to have Habib as a follower and keep Maggie alive. These two conditions are mandatory for triggering Habib’s requests, because after constructing the guesthouse, Habib only joins the team and becomes a follower through Maggie’s introduction.

Then, Habib raises three requests in total, and players need to respond to one of his requests every time after upgrading the guesthouse.

  1. How to Handle the Trimmings? (Guesthouse Level 2): It’d be best to choose “Unnecessary” as the answer, because this triggers the slum orphans to come to Arzu later. The first answer cannot guarantee the completion of the trimming event.
  2. Should We Cook Complex Dishes? (Guesthouse Level 3): Players can choose either answer, and this request is counted as finished.
  3. Who Should We Rent the Attic To? (Guesthouse Level 4): Choose “Mercenary”. The Mercenary Adventure joins Arzu’s team after the events, Change of Dynasty and Before Dawn.

Accept the Help from Faraj: Troop of Radicals

Faraj is the noble follower that players can choose to have at the start of the game. Faraj’s troop has conditions on Arzu’s notoriety level and infamy level. Thus, players need to adjust Arzu’s notoriety and infamy well in order to trigger Faraj’s events. Moreover, players need to drag Faraj to Methinks when there is an exclamation mark on top of him to start the event.

Troop of Radicals, one of Sultan’s Game troops, joins the team immediately after the completion of Revolutionary Salon, making it convenient for players who need troops for other normal events. Another advantage of this route is that the series of events is not overly complicated.

  1. Should We Hold the Radicals’ Gatherings?: Both choices (“Accept” & “Reject”) are okay. Choosing “Accept” is better because helping Faraj can increase his attributes.
  2. Youth’s Curtain (Choose “Accept”, Notoriety ≥ 12, Infamy < 3): Players can choose to help Faraj out with the rebellion conviction or coins.
  3. Dangerous Gathering (Notoriety ≥ 15, Infamy < 6): Players can choose to help Faraj out with the rebellion conviction or coins.
  4. Revolutionary Salon (Notoriety ≥ 18, Infamy < 9): Place rebellion conviction and 15 coins to acquire Troop of Radicals. Regicide Plot gives a gold-tier troop, and Intent to Rebel gives a silver-tier troop.

Help Alim with the Nursery: The Gardeners

Building the nursery and finishing giving orphans education gives players a troop called The Gardeners, one of Sultan’s Game troops. However, The Gardeners only show up during and after the Burning City event in the rebellion route. Do not count on The Gardeners to join the Dawn Rally event, where a troop is mandatory for the game to proceed.

Players can choose either to go through Alim’s storyline or Nawfal’s to build the nursery. Alim does not have to become a follower to build the nursery, but having him as a follower is the only way to obtain the Roaming Swordsman’s army. For this reason, this guide explains the events of the complete Alim’s storyline.

Here is how to build the nursery with Alim because this storyline is faster than Nawfal’s.

Complete Alim’s Storyline

  1. Catching a Thief (After breaking a Sultan’s card upon finishing the guesthouse construction): Send a follower with combat & physique ≥ 3.
  2. How to Deal with the Thief?: Choose either “Let him go” or “Hold him to cancel the card.”
  3. Alim’s Visit: Choose to scold him, praise him, or challenge him.
  4. One Hand for Goods (Choose to praise him): Send Hemir back to him if players choose to keep him earlier. Send a follower with stealth & wisdom ≥ 1, if players want to get new equipment from Alim.
  5. Money First, Goods Later (Choose to scold him or challenge him): Return Hemir to Alim.
  6. Missing Rogue: Choose “Accept” to help Alim out.
  7. Nest of Decay: Send a follower with combat & physique ≥ 9, and a second follower with survival & stealth ≥ 6. Players can skip the first check with Notoriety ≥ 10 and Infamy < 10, or Infamy ≥ 10. This event gives players the Pickpocket’s Whistle that belongs to Hemir.
  8. Street Urchins: Put in 3 coins to have the urchins.
  9. White Belly: Give White Belly the Pickpocket’s Whistle or send Arzu to pass the combat & physique – White Belly’s combat & physique ≥ 2 check.
  10. Turning the Millstone: Send a follower with 1 coin.
  11. Thief Apprentice: Send a follower to pass sociability & charisma – Hemir’s sociability & charisma ≥ 8 check, and the wisdom & stealth ≥ 6 check. The event is still counted as finished even when players do not pass the checks.
  12. Alim becomes a follower after players finish Thief Apprentice and build the nursery.

Build the Nursery and Educate the Kids

Players can drag the Street Urchins card to Methinks to figure out a way to settle down the kids, or else the kids consume 3 coins out of Arzu’s pocket from time to time. There are multiple solutions for handling the urchins that will come up from Methinks. To build a nursery, players need to choose the event Become Human, and simply ignore other events.

There is no need to re-educate after new urchin cards join the nursery.

Collect all five virtues and The Gardeners will join the rebellion fight before the event Burning City.

  1. Become Human: Pay 10 coins to build a nursery for the urchins.
  2. Nursery: Put in different characters to educate the kids together with 5 coins to collect all 5 virtues: love, faith, wisdom, strength, and happiness. Different characters have their unique virtue cards, but no matter what the cards are, they need to fill up the five virtue slots.
  3. 1st Slot of the Nursery: Choose Maggie, Faris, or Jalila to educate.
  4. 2nd Slot of the Nursery: Choose Adila, Faraj, or Lumera to educate.
  5. 3rd Slot of the Nursery: Choose Shama, Jawad, or Habib to educate.
  6. 4th Slot of the Nursery: Choose Nabhani or Nayla to educate. If the nursery is built by Nawfal, he will give the first lesson and fill this slot.
  7. 5th Slot of the Nursery: Choose Mahir, Alim, or Jabar to educate.

(Optional) Collect Another Street Urchins & the Slum Orphans

Collecting another Street Urchins and the Slum Orphans from Nawfal is not mandatory. As long as there is at least one group of kids in the nursery and the five lessons are taught, The Gardeners will join the rebellion battle. Another group of urchins is from the cult storyline, which is not covered in this post.

To collect the other Street Urchins, Maggie and Habib have to be alive, and the nursery has to be built. Additionally, players need to choose “Unnecessary” when Habib asks if he should make use of the trimmings (the request after the guesthouse is upgraded to level 2).

  1. Beggars Are Scavenging behind the Guesthouse: Choose “Come with me” when this text pops up.
  2. Waiting for A Meal: Give the beggars any meal made by Habib.
  3. New Possibilities… Children Perhaps?: Choose “I can help you” when this text pops up, and get another Street Urchins card.
  4. Nursery: Put the Street Urchins in with 5 coins.

Nawfal either builds the nursery with the Slum Orphans directly joining the nursery or sends the Slum Orphans to Arzu if the nursery is already built. Players need to finish the event The Crossing of Clear Streams and the Secret Oath tag, which will be further explained in the King of Flames army section.

Guide the Oppressed People with Nawfal: King of Flames Army

King of Flames Army, one of Sultan’s Game troops, can be obtained by one of Nawfal’s storylines, whose part is a bit more complicated than the previously mentioned ways of acquiring troops. There are two major aspects that players need to pay attention to. One is to complete the events that can keep Nawfal alive, and the other is to finish the route to obtain the King of Flames Army.

Additionally, Nawfal’s storyline can start the rebellion route; thus, the following section will give a comprehensive guide on how to continue Nawfal’s storyline, other than just the King of Flames Army section.

Start the Rebellion Route

  1. Encounter Nawfal at the Bookstore: Keep visiting the bookstore to trigger this pop-up. Choose “What is this” to get the Note Within a Book. Drag the note into Methinks.
  2. Private Meeting: Send Arzu to the meeting with the Note Within a Book. Do not use any Sultan’s cards here. This event kicks start the rebellion route and gives Arzu the Intent to Rebel card, which is very useful later for obtaining armies.

The following events can be categorized into three sections: the events to keep Nawfal alive, the events to get the King of Flames Army, and the optional events to obtain the Slum Orphans. It is most convenient to keep Nawfal alive in case players cannot get the army in time.

How to Keep Nawfal Alive

The main risk of Nawfal being killed is from Abdul, the vizier. Therefore, players need to follow a series of events related to the political plots between Nawfal and Abdul. Because this part is not the main focus of the post, the following section lists only the events that players need to attend and pass the checks, so that in the end, Nawfal can overthrow Abdul.

Have King of Flames Army Ready

This series of events happens after the Private Meeting. Finishing these events unlocks the help from King of Flames Army at the Gathering Troops stage. Moreover, the end of the Courage & Unity event also gives Nawfal the Secret Oath tag that can be used to obtain the Slum Orphans.

  1. Futile Charity: Donate 3 coins.
  2. What Do the Poor Really Need?: Collect at least 7 answers from different people within 10 rounds.
  3. Share the Answer with Nawfal: This is a pop-up window. Choose “Help eliminate their true enemies.”
  4. Fire of Punishment: Send a follower who has stealth ≥ 5 without any equipment with 10 coins.
  5. Rob the Rich, Give to the Poor: King of Flames needs to pass the check of combat & physique ≥ 3
  6. Vengeance in Justice: King of Flames needs to pass the check of combat & physique ≥ 3
  7. What Should the Fire King Focus on in the Next Publicity?: Choose “Guide”.
  8. Courage & Unity: Put in King of Flames and Arzu.

(Optional) Collect the Slum Orphans for Nursery

These events have some crossovers with the route of keeping Nawfal alive. The pop-up window shows up after Arzu attends the Private Meeting event.

Nawfal sends the Slum Orphans to Arzu’s nursery upon finishing Clean Troops and obtaining the Secret Oath tag.

  2. The Crossing of Clear Streams: Arzu needs to pass three rounds of physique ≥ 3 check and one round of wisdom ≥ 3 check to identify the correct spy.
  3. Clean Troops: Send Arzu to identify the spy for Nawfal, who should be the young man.

Overthrow the Slave Market with Riel: Collect 6 Troops in Total

Collecting troops through Riel’s storyline is one of the best ways to acquire multiple armies at the same time. Compared to Nawfal’s storyline, Riel’s part is much more straightforward and time-efficient in yielding multiple armies. Upon completion of Riel’s story, players can obtain up to 6 troops, more than enough for the rebellion route.

Players can start Riel’s plot either through Nabhani or the incident that happens after 30 days into the game. Additionally, players can only choose to have either Riel’s army or Habunah’s army. If players start the Exhibition of Flesh event and save Habunah instead, Riel will not burn down the slave market and escape later.

  1. Break a Carnality Card at House of Delights: Break any Carnality Card there except the gold-tier ones.
  2. An Interesting Incident: Send either Maggie or Arzu to talk to Nabhani.
  3. Unreliable Ally: Place an Extravagance Card.
  4. Exhibition of Flesh: Save the babarian slave using 3 or 6 coins.

Mud Crowd

  1. Gang Rivalry: Help Riel win the fight with her combat – Jackal’s combat ≥ 2. Players should put in coins or an intelligence card for her, or send a follower to assist. The win will unlock Riel’s gang and give players the Mud Crowd, one of Sultan’s Game troops, in the gang.

Alley Jackals

  1. Hunting the Jackals: Send a follower to help Riel pass the check of the combat – Jackal’s combat ≥ 5, and put in 5 coins to recruit the Jackals.

Gun Maidens

  1. To the House of Delights: Pay 20 coins to have Gun Maidens directly. Otherwise, send Nabhani or Arzu to help Riel get into the House of Delights.
  2. The Great Sister Heist (If players do not pay 20 coins): Send 2 followers to pass the combat & physique ≥ 8, and combat & stealth ≥ 5 check.

Blade Winds, Soul Hunters, and Paper Shredders

  1. Hunting the Slave Hunters: Send Nabhani or 20 coins to pass the check. Other followers need to pass the sociability & stealth ≥ 3 check.
  2. The Naked Tea Party: Send Arzu and three other followers. Arzu needs to pass the charisma & sociability – 3 ≥ 3 check. The first follower has the stealth & wisdom ≥ 3 check. The second follower has the stealth & sociability ≥ 3 check. The third follower has the stealth & combat ≥ 5 check. Passing all checks gives players two clues about the hunters and one piece of evidence on the vizier’s crimes.
  3. The Full Confession: Send a follower to interrogate to get the Slave Hunter Clue III.
  4. Drag the three Slave Hunter Clues to Methinks one by one.
  5. Hunter’s Remnants: Every Slave Hunter Clue triggers this event once. Pass the combat & physique ≥ 5 check every time to get Blade Winds, Soul Hunters, and Paper Shredders.

Earn People’s Trust with Fardak: Refugee Army & Indignant Crowd

Fardak, who is a hostage from a vassal tribe, offers two additional ways to obtain troops: the Indignant Crowd and the Refugee Army. Both armies can join the team directly, so that players can use them in normal events besides the rebellion events.

It is much easier and faster to get Refugee Army, compared to the Indignant Crowd. Moreover, players can regard Refugee Army as the second easiest troop to obtain in the game, other than the Marauder’s Band.

Save Fardak from the Sultan’s Control

  1. The Sultan’s Prank: Players need to attend the Grand Game 15 times to trigger the prank. Use the Extravagance Card on Fardak.
  2. Building the Palace: Use 10 coins to build the palace.
  3. Building Underground Channels: Send 3 followers with high survival attributes and 8 coins.
  4. Fardak’s Friendship: Players can choose to use rebellion convictions on him. Fardak becomes a follower after this event.

Refugee Army

  1. Send Fardak to recruit any retainers from the guesthouse.
  2. Hometown Folks Meet: Players do not need to do anything for this event.
  3. At Your Service: Show the general any troops, 18 coins, Intent to Rebel, or Regicide Plot to get the Refugee Army.

Indignant Crowd

Players need to finish the three events from the tax officer Ziad to earn the people’s trust and the Indignant Crowd troop.

After saving Fardak from The Sultan’s Prank, Fardak sends a request for help to his homeland to deal with the drought.

  1. Building Underground Channels: Choose to build underground channels when the request pops up. Send 3 followers with high survival attributes and 8 coins.
  2. Farmers Running Away from the Land: Choose “Promise great benefits” when Ziad sends a pop-up request again.
  3. Promise of Mercy: Send a follower with charisma ≥ 5 with 5 coins.
  4. Mountain Bandits Attacking the Trade: Choose “Facilitate negotiation” when Ziad sends a pop-up request again.
  5. Facilitate Negotiation: Send a follower with sociability ≥ 6
  6. Handling the Infidels Who Refuse to Pay Tax: Choose “Check for vulnerabilities” when Ziad sends a pop-up request again.
  7. Check for Vulnerabilities: Send a follower with wisdom ≥ 8, and another follower with high wisdom and sociability, to pass the wisdom & sociability – 5 ≥ 3 check.
  8. Sultan’s Suspicion: Send Arzu with 8 coins.

The easiest and simplest routes of getting troops are through Reprobates in Refuge, Riel’s gang, and Fardak’s Refugee Army. Out of these three methods, Reprobates in Refuge gives armies at an early stage of the game. Both Marauder’s Band and Refugee Army give troops for the normal events, making it convenient for some events. All in all, if players do not want to spend too much time on troop gathering, they can always just collect one troop to pass the check of The Dawn Rally, and use followers instead to win the later rebellion battles.
