Fields of Mistria Breeding Guide: How to Breed Animals, Unlock Colors, and Get Higher Tiers

Animal breeding is both a collection and a money-earning activity that the player can do in Fields of Mistria. While buying animals from Hayden’s shop is enough to start your farm, breeding gives you a way to expand your livestock, discover different animal colors, and work toward higher-tier animals. If you’re trying to unlock every animal color and tier, or simply want to build a profitable ranch, here’s everything you need to know about breeding in Fields of Mistria.

Fields of Mistria Breeding Guide Simply Explained

Fields of Mistria Breeding Guide (Simply Explained): The first thing you need is a male and female animal of the same species. You can purchase animals from Hayden’s shop, but buying animals alone doesn’t start the breeding process. You also need a special item called a Heart Shaped Treat.

Once you have the appropriate animals and heart-shaped treats, you can begin the breeding process by feeding the treats to the animals you want to breed. Each animal type has their own type of breeding snack, so make sure you get the right one.

The basic process is:

  1. Purchase a male and female animal of the same species.
  2. Make sure you have enough space in the coop or barn for the offspring.
  3. Buy two heart-shaped treats from Hayden: one for the female, and one for the male.
  4. Feed one heart-shaped treat to the male animal.
  5. Feed one heart-shaped treat to the female animal.
  6. Wait for the breeding process to complete.

The player can check the animal information panel to see which animals are breeding.

How Animal Colors Work

One of the most important things to understand about breeding in Fields of Mistria is that the offspring’s color isn’t simply inherited from the parents.

  • This means breeding two animals of the same color does not guarantee you’ll keep getting the same-colored animals. (Unless you are breeding for tier 4 and tier 5, because these two tiers only have one color each: silver and gold colors.) For example, you could make two tier 2 black rabbits breed and get one tier 3 pink rabbit on the first try, and one tier 3 purple rabbit on the second try.
  • The offspring can receive a different color even when both parents look exactly the same.
  • The color of the tier 6 animals is decided by the season in which they are born.

This makes breeding particularly useful for players who want to collect different animal colors. Instead of trying to match specific parent colors to produce a specific offspring, you’ll generally want to breed repeatedly and keep the colors you haven’t unlocked yet.

How Animal Tiers Work

Animal tiers work differently from colors. While colors can be random, the parents’ tier has a direct relationship with the tier of the offspring.

The key rule is:

Two parents of the same tier can guarantee an offspring of the next tier.

This is the most important rule to remember when you’re trying to breed high-tier animals. For example, if you have two tier 1 animals of the same species, breeding them can produce a tier 2 offspring. Then you can use tier 2 animals to work toward tier 3, and continue this process through the higher tiers.

The system therefore works as a progression:

  • Tier 1 → Tier 2 → Tier 3 → Tier 4 → Tier 5 → Tier 6 (Random)

However, there is an important exception at the highest tier. Tier 6 is random when breeding from tier 5 parents. In other words, breeding two tier 5 animals doesn’t guarantee a tier 6 offspring in the same way that lower-tier progression works. It’s highly likely that in your attempt to breed tier 6 animals, your coops and barns will be filled with tier 5 animals.

The guaranteed way to breed the next tier is to use animals of the same tier to breed.

The Best Breeding Practice for Higher Tiers

If you’re trying to climb through the tiers efficiently, there’s a particularly useful strategy. Rather than simply buying lots of animals and breeding them randomly, use one newly bred animal and one purchased animal to progress to the next tier. The color does not matter for climbing the tiers, because all types of animals eventually will become gold-colored only when reaching tier 5.

For example, suppose you want to move from tier 2 to tier 3. You can:

  1. Breed your tier 1 parents.
  2. Unlock one tier 2 offspring.
  3. Buy another tier 2 from Hayden.
  4. Breed the two tier 2 animals.
  5. Obtain your tier 3 offspring.
  6. Repeat the process for tier 4.

This approach can help you unlock high-tier animals faster.

Once the player has the luck to unlock the first tier 6 animal, Hayden will start to sell that color as well. For example, if the player managed to breed a tier 6 Spring-color chicken, Hayden will start to sell that color as well. Easier for the player to keep breeding tier 6 animals using the above-mentioned method as well.

The color variation will be available for adoption at Hayden's shop as soon as the player successfully bred one animal of that color.

The Best Breeding Practice for More Profits

Higher-tier animals do not produce additional special products simply because they have a higher tier. So, don’t assume that breeding animals will automatically generate significantly more valuable products.

This means there are essentially two major ways to make money from animals.

  1. Method 1: Build Animal Bonds for Golden Products. The first method is to keep your animals and develop a strong relationship with them. Pet and care for your animals regularly to build their bond. As your relationship with an animal improves, it can eventually produce golden products. These special products are more valuable and can make keeping animals worthwhile over the long term. This is the better strategy if you want a stable ranch where your animals continuously provide resources.
  2. Method 2: Breed and Sell High-Tier Animals. Instead of keeping every animal you produce, focus on climbing the tier system. Breed animals upward, keep the higher-tier offspring you need, and sell surplus high-tier animals. This is particularly attractive if you enjoy the breeding system and want to work toward tier 6 animals. The strategy looks like this: Breed → Get higher tier → Keep what you need → Sell surplus → Breed again

At the end of this Fields of Mistria breeding guide, it is worthwhile to note that no matter which route the player opts for, generally speaking, making a profit from ranching in Fields of Mistria takes a lot of effort, compared to mining and farming:

  1. Reaching 10 hearts is a long journey, even when the player is feeding them dishes. (And even dishes take much time and sweat to make because of the slow pace of farming.)
  2. Breeding animals for selling takes time, and selling a tier 5 or tier 6 baby animal only makes hundreds.
  3. Animals require constant petting and feeding for growing bonds and producing items. They may not produce anything if the player did not pet them earlier yesterday.
