When Can You Explore the Mines in Fields of Mistria
The mines in Fields of Mistria aren’t available at the beginning of the game. Early in your adventure, you’ll receive a letter from Eiland explaining that the mines have been closed since an earthquake struck Mistria. He asks you to help convince Errol to reopen them.
However, Errol won’t allow access immediately. You first need to raise Mistria to Town Rank: Stone. Once the town reaches this rank, the story quest “Unlocking the Mines” allows you to enter. The mines are located at the northern end of The Narrows. The player needs to keep going left after crossing the Blacksmith’s and the museum.
Once they’re open, the mines become a major part of your regular routine. You’ll want to visit them for ores needed to upgrade your tools, gems for crafting and museum donations, and resources required for the seals blocking deeper areas.

How Many Floors Are in the Mines
There are 100 numbered floors in the mines, divided into five biomes.
| Area | Floors | Main Ore | Descriptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper Mines | 1–20 | Copper | Areas simple to explore, with some water areas. |
| Tide Caverns | 21–40 | Iron | Many water areas, but the layout remains simple. |
| Deep Earth | 41–60 | Silver | Layouts have balanced water and earth areas, but with teleporting whirlpools. |
| Lava Caves | 61–80 | Gold | There are earth, lava, and water areas. More difficult to explore due to the lava. |
| Ancient Ruins | 81–100 90 Priestess Quarters 100 Final Seal | Mistril | Visibility seriously limited, and the layouts are like a maze. |
There is an important distinction with the final area. The Ancient Ruins cover Floors 81–100, but Floor 90 is a special story area, while Floors 91–100 are unlocked only after completing the quest and finding the Magic Key.

The materials are very common.) |

How to Find the Ladder and Travel Down the Mines Efficiently
Tips for Finding Ladders
On normal floors, the ladder to the next floor appears after you break rocks or defeat monsters. You don’t need to completely clear every floor. If your goal is simply to reach a deeper level, focus on finding the ladder rather than mining every available rock. Here are some useful strategies to help you reach beyond 5 floors in one day:
- The first thing to do is to explore the whole floor and look for if there is already a ladder hatch, and don’t start slaying monsters or breaking things yet. If you’ve found the hatch, all you need is to find the lever. (Sometimes the sign next to the floor number suggests whether there is a lever on the floor, but it is not always accurate.)
- Clear rocks in areas that are easy to access if there is no hatch. For example, clear all the rocks around you, and there is a high chance that the ladder will spawn right away.
- If you are out of Stamina, you can start slaying monsters. Slaying monsters does not consume Stamina, and there is still a chance to spawn the ladder.
Other Efficiency Tips
- You don’t have to reach home before 2 AM. The player can spend the whole day mining, and the penalty is just teleporting the player back home with HP and Stamina partially recovered.
- Always upgrade the pickaxe, armor, and then sword after reaching a new area. The pickaxe is the one and only tool that can help you dig faster.
- Stamina management: Usually, bringing one dish that can regenerate 50 Stamina is enough to reach five floors and beyond. But the most convenient method remains using the magic Full Restore.

Fields of Mistria Mines Storyline Explained [Spoilers]
The mines are ultimately connected to the mystery of Caldarus, magic, and the Gate Between Worlds.
The Final Seal
Long before the events of the game, the Gate was sealed. As a result, magic gradually disappeared from the world. Then an earthquake caused a crack to appear in the seal. That crack allowed magic to begin leaking back into the world. This is why magical phenomena have started appearing around Mistria — and why the player character can recognize and interact with Magic Essence (functionally, this is a mechanism for the player to level up skills).
The mines contain the ancient structures built around this magical system. The seals weren’t simply blocking the way to deeper mining areas. They were part of a much larger system designed to protect or control the Gate Between Worlds.
Seridia and Caldarus
- The mysterious Dragon Priestess has been waiting for someone capable of restoring the dragon’s power. She eventually reveals that the player is the hero she has been waiting for.
- There’s also a major connection between the player and Caldarus. When the Fire Seal trap activates, Caldarus responds to the player’s call and intervenes. His appearance in physical form reveals that he is far more connected to the mines’ ancient magic than previously understood. However, he has lost his power and his memory. The Priestess becomes increasingly concerned about protecting him and repeatedly asks the player not to tell Caldarus everything.
Dragonsworn
The Dragonsworn Tablet then reveals another part of the ancient history, connecting Juniper and Eiland to the investigation. By investigating with Juniper and Eiland, it reveals that the player is the Dragonsworn of this age and possesses the power to break the Final Seal.
Upon breaking the Final Seal, the Priestess reveals her identity as Seridia, another dragon whom Caldarus tried to seal in at the cost of his eternal life and power. Because the player has paid tributes to both the dragon statue on the farm (Caldarus) and the one in the mine (Seridia), they admit that the player is their mutual Dragonsworn, and agree to a truce and seal the Gate between Worlds.
And finally, we have two more romanceable new NPCs! – Seridia and Caldarus, who is no longer confined to the Deep Wood.

Why You May or May Not Enjoy Mining in Fields of Mistria
All in all, the mines in Fields of Mistria are much more than a place to collect Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, and Mistril. They are essentially one of the game’s major storylines, with each 20-floor section introducing a new environment, resources, enemies, and piece of the mystery surrounding Mistria.
| What makes the mines fun | The boring parts about mining |
| 1. There are many collectables and gems in the mines, contributing to the player’s early-game income stream. 2. The monsters are relatively easy to defeat, as long as the player upgrades the armor and swords. (Fully upgraded armor basically gives you the ability to ignore all the attacks…) 3. The player needs to rely on mining to fund farming, ranching, and other purchases. 4. If you are interested in romancing Caldarus and Seridia, you will definitely want to reach the Final Seal fast. | 1. Failing to reach the next fifth floor with the elevator is frustrating. 2. Most of the work is repetitive. Digging, fishing, looking for materials to open the seals. 3. Collecting materials means digging through mines again and again for the searching. 4. Yes, there is magic in the game, but the use of magic is actually very limited. |
